If you've ever lived in a small town, you know that the appeal of being tucked away from the world can quickly become a downside for those unaccustomed to taking pleasure in simpler things or those addicted to our fast-paced society where the focus on participating in something "important" is practically a requirement. But even small towns have their important things and for Beartown, it's hockey. Known for being the good losers in the sport, Beartown pins all their hopes on a group of teenagers to propel them to national hockey dominance in order to return an investment, bring back the towns dying economy and to bring a sense of pride back to a small town on life-support. The main question is: At what cost?

This book would be appropriate for a wide group of readers as it covers high school life, desire for fame, immigrant assimilation, the adult pressures to succeed in small town politics/management, grief and the loss of loved ones, the topic of women balancing career with family, and the various/familiar trials along the broad spectrum of family life. While all the aforementioned are covered, its center is around hockey so be prepared for sports terms and locker room talk. There are a lot of characters on the way to this town defining its modern identity and there are at least three plot lines to follow so definitely not a book I'd recommend to start right before bed. Some of the characters thoughts borderline philosophical and I ended up writing a thought or two down to remember in future. While I won't be keeping this one in my library, I would definitely recommend to those who love the sport of hockey or sports in general.
