The underlying cause of happiness is not external, but internal: being appreciative and generous. Try the following to boost your appreciation and generosity and in the process increase your joy, even if you live alone.

Meditate on positive things

There are things that you have that other people don’t have. At one time I had a neighbor who had a disability but was very happy. I asked him how he could be satisfied when he could barely walk. I still remember his name—Adella.

Adella told me something that I have practiced ever since: meditate on blessings you enjoy that others don't have. He pointed to his well-furnished room and good health. "There many out there who have nowhere to sleep, are sick, with no healthcare,” he said appreciatively.

Do not be idle

Appreciate the life you enjoy and use it to the full. There are things that we take for granted such as the ability to write. Did you know that people in some parts of Africa and Asia learn to read and write while in their 80s? Start with recording your journal entries and move on to writing fiction books.

You can cook your meals

Buy a cookbook and use a new recipe every day. You will not only eat healthily, but you may discover a unique gift that you did not know that you possessed. Inviting others to share a meal will double your happiness because it taps into the underlying cause of joy—generosity.

Appreciate diversity

One primary cause of unhappiness is trying to judge others according to some preconceived standard. You will not be able to change people. If they are white, black, red or yellow, you cannot change that fact. Learn to accept and appreciate diversity, when it comes to how people act and behave.

Dispose of what you do not need

Take time to de-clutter your bookshelves, wardrobe, and kitchen. You can set different days to clear what you don’t need and make room in your home for more. Being neat brings happiness.
