Day 4 of my Duolingo French streak and I鈥檓 actually starting to enjoy this thing ngl. I opened the app around 9pm and the first question that came up was "see you soon" and I had to pick the right translation. The options were "ou", "脿 bient么t" and "et toi". I almost clicked "et toi" out of habit from day 3 but then the audio played and I caught that "脿 bient么t" sound. Tapped it and got "Nice!" with my combo hitting x17. I was so happy because I鈥檝e heard "脿 bient么t" in movies before but never knew how to spell it. The little owl in orange was saying it and I played the sound like three times because the "bient么t" part always trips me up. My mouth just doesn鈥檛 want to make that "t么t" sound properly yet.
Then Duolingo started throwing names at me and that鈥檚 when it got fun. First "NEW WORD" popped up with Paul in big purple letters. After that they gave me "脌 bient么t, Paul !" and I had to build the sentence "See you soon Paul". I dragged See, you, soon, Paul in that order and when I hit check it said "Awesome!" and combo went to x18. I was feeling myself a bit. Literally 2 seconds later they did the exact same thing with Lisa. "脌 bient么t, Lisa !" and I just copied the same pattern. See you soon Lisa. Got "Nicely done!" and combo x19. It鈥檚 funny how Duolingo teaches you by just swapping the name. By the third time I was saying it out loud without even thinking. "A bientot Paul, a bientot Lisa". My roommate looked at me weird but I don鈥檛 care. The girl character with the yellow bow was waving when I got it right and that made me laugh.
The next new word was New York and I was like okay where is this going. Then the sentence came: "Paris et New York". The guy with the beard and pink shirt said it and I had to put the words together. So I picked Paris, then and, then New, then York. When I got it right the screen did that big "COMBO x20" lightning thing and Duo even flew across the screen with a +1 heart. I felt like I just won a match or something. It鈥檚 wild that I鈥檓 now learning how to connect cities. From "moi aussi" and "je viens de Lyon" on day 3 to "Paris et New York" on day 4. The audio for "et" is so quick I almost missed it. I replayed it like 4 times just to catch how French people link the words. I even tried saying "Paris et New York" to myself while brushing my teeth after.
Last one before I closed the app was "Je m'appelle Paul." The lady in red with the hat was saying it. I already knew "Je" is I and "Paul" is Paul from earlier, so I just had to figure out "m'appelle". Put My name is Paul and got it right. Duolingo gave me hearts back and my streak is still alive. Day 4 taught me how to say goodbye properly, how to use names in sentences, and how to say two cities together. It鈥檚 not much but I can already greet someone, say see you later, and introduce myself now. If someone asks me tomorrow I can say "Je m'appelle... 脌 bient么t". Tomorrow I鈥檓 aiming for combo x25 and maybe learn "I live in". Streak still alive and I鈥檓 not letting Duo get mad at me 馃挭
