Having missed this morning's update, I can say there wasn't too much to report, other than the beginning of the value descent--which I anticipated and won't lose any sleep over. So, let's dive in.
Value is dipping--as I mentioned--as well as the hash rate. The miners had to be brought down to 450 MHz each, with the exception of miner 5 which is running at 400 MHz due to chip failures. Not a great mining day, to be honest; However, as you'll see in the next screenshot, the temperature crisis has been staved off for the moment partly due to the 3°C (37°F) outside temp--a drop from 6°C (43°F).
This is a chart of the last 4 hours (240 minutes on the X-axis), in case I hadn't explained that previously. The miners like the intake to be at or below 20°C (68°F) and the exhaust to be at or below 35°C (95°F). I might explain the thermodynamics behind the relationship between the intake and exhaust and what attributes play a part in mining in a later post, but I'll spare those who already know it in this post.
Thursday, the forecast calls for 50°F (10°C). That will be the warmest the miner's outdoor intake cooler has ever drawn when it has actually been hooked up outside. Now, the intake has dealt with temperatures of up to 27°C (81°F) at as low as 10% humidity and managed to keep the max chip temp for all of the miners below 70°C (158°F), but the power efficiency falls through the floor and the exhaust temp can be as high as 44°C (111°F). Also, that was with the vacuum insulated cooling chamber--which isn't present anymore--and 1,100 CFM intake flow--which is now 600 CFM. I will be unable to devote much time to the mining rig tomorrow, so I basically have three days to improve the cooling system or maybe risk having to shut down a couple machines... Should be cake.
To summarize; The rig went through hotter-than-Death-Valley-in-July temperatures, lost 3% hash rate two days after a reduction in mining fees and right before the next market correction which will likely be in a trench around distribution day, but the weather is providing some needed relief after two incidents that damaged the cooling system which has ultimately given me three regular weekdays--so evenings--to install a 600+ CFM capable booster (or equivalent combination), buy and receive four new cooling cores (little radiators), buy a decent DC water pump, build a new cooling tower with the 3,600 CFM industrial air mover I have lying around, and magically tear out a glass-block window and replace it with a hopper window capable of handling the two 10" insulated ducts required for exhaust and intake (the intake draws the air closest to the ground while the exhaust is extended another 4-5'). Is it still worth the minor gains? Absolutely.
