Plot

The film opens with a scene from the end of the previous installment, showing our protagonist, Harry Potter, and Albus Dumbledore walking away from a group of reporters. We then see a group of Death Eaters flying over London toward Diagon Alley. They crash-land at Garrick Ollivander’s famous wand shop and take the owner with them. Not content with that, they also strike in the Muggle world, causing a bridge to collapse completely. Meanwhile, we see our protagonist spending his last days of vacation in a café at the train station.

It’s one of the darkest movies I’ve ever seen, and I’m not saying that mainly because of its story or its blend of fantasy, drama, and horror elements. I’m referring more to a small visual detail in this film that makes it unique among the entire Harry Potter film series. That’s right, I’m talking about the muted, cold, dark, and rather gloomy tone that pervades the film as a whole. I don’t know why there’s such a sudden shift in visual tone between the previous film and this one—honestly. It’s not that I’m complaining about this detail per se, but I do remember the many times I watched this movie on TV as a teenager and had a hard time watching it properly because of this very thing. But anyway, let’s just say this tone didn’t suit the film all that badly, considering everything it shows us. Starting with that opening, which is incredibly dramatic and straight out of an action movie, literally. Then we see Harry Potter playing matchmaker, hoping to go out with a girl who works at a café in the train station. From here on, we get a unique blend of drama and romance, with some action, mystery, and fantasy, of course. Albus Dumbledore’s appearance and role in this sixth installment are both key and noteworthy for reasons that are obvious to those of us who’ve already seen this movie.

De las películas más oscuras que he visto en mi vida y no lo digo principalmente por su historia o mezcla de fantasía con drama y elementos de terror. Me refiero más a un pequeño detalle visual que posee esta película que la hace única entre toda la saga cinematográfica de Harry Potter. Así es, estoy hablando de ese tono apagado, frío, oscuro y bastante opaco que posee la película en general. No sé por qué el cambio tan repentino de tono visual entre la película anterior y ésta, de verdad. No es que me queje como tal de este detalle, pero sí recuerdo las distintas veces que veía esta película en la televisión cuando adolescente y me costaba verla bien por esto mismo. Pero bueno, digamos que tampoco le quedaba tan mal este tono a la película si tomamos en cuenta todo lo que nos muestra. Empezando con ese inicio que es de lo más dramático y sacado de una película de acción, literalmente. Luego vemos a Harry Potter de casamentero esperando salir con una chica que trabaja en un café de la estación de trenes. A partir de aquí podemos ver una amalgama única de drama con romance, algo de acción, misterio y fantasía, por supuesto. La aparición y participación de Albus Dumbledore en esta sexta entrega es bastante clave y notable a la vez por razones que son evidentes para los que ya vimos esta película.

When I said earlier that this is the most tragic film in the entire Harry Potter series, I wasn’t exaggerating. Not only do we see a remarkable development in several main and supporting characters unlike anything we’ve seen before. One such example is Albus Dumbledore himself, who goes from being a simple supporting character fulfilling his role as headmaster of Hogwarts to becoming someone more important to Harry than he ever was before. His training and guidance throughout the film are no coincidence, especially when you see how they introduce a new character like Professor Horace Slughorn. This is another character worth highlighting for his unique portrayal and performance, especially since he ends up being key to the plot in the end. Another supporting character who really stands out here is the well-known Draco Malfoy, who undergoes a somewhat remarkable development in this film. While he ultimately doesn’t quite live up to the expectations many of us had for him, he does give us a few iconic scenes. What caught my attention the most is how Severus Snape is developed in this film, starting out as just another subordinate of the Dark Lord who promises to look after Draco.

Y es que no solo veremos un desarrollo bastante notable de varios personajes principales y secundarios como nunca antes se ha visto. Uno de estos casos es el mismo Albus Dumbledore quien pasa de ser el simple personaje secundario que cumple con su rol de director de la escuela Hogwarts a volverse alguien más importante para Harry de lo que nunca antes llegó a ser. Su entrenamiento y guía a lo largo de la película no es pura coincidencia, sobre todo al ver cómo incorporan a un nuevo personaje como lo es el profesor Horace Slughorn. Este es otro de esos personajes a destacar por su particular interpretación y actuación, sobre todo porque termina siendo clave para la trama al final. Otro personaje secundario que llega a destacarse bastante aquí es el conocido Draco Malfoy, quien tiene un desarrollo un tanto destacable en esta película. Si bien al final no termina de llenar las expectativas que teníamos muchos sobre él, llega a darnos una que otra escena icónica. Lo que más me llamó la atención es cómo desarrollan a Severus Snape en esta película, siendo al principio solamente un subordinado más del Señor Tenebroso que promete cuidar a Draco.

But then we see how they pull an entire subplot out of thin air involving a character we don’t know at first—the “Half-Blood Prince.” The way the film gives us so many clues and details about who he turns out to be in the end is so masterful that it’s hard not to figure it out right away. Another thing I really like is how well-balanced the mix of drama, comedy, and romance is throughout the film. We see some characters go through experiences we’ve never seen them go through before—like Ron Weasley with love, for example. The same goes for our protagonist, who actually ends up getting along better with Ron’s younger sister, by the way. I won’t deny that there were moments that were a bit absurd, but funny at the same time. There are also some details regarding the film’s script, such as the Vanishing Cabinets and their function, as well as the plot surrounding Draco Malfoy’s mission. And speaking of missions, there’s the one Albus gives Harry at the beginning of the film. I’ll just say that Harry isn’t very good at getting information out of people, honestly. But I don’t think that’s the real problem here; rather, it’s the way everything unfolds until the end. The revelation of Slughorn’s secret and his connection to Voldemort is something that doesn’t quite convince me.

La manera en la que la película llega a darnos tantas pistas y detalles de quién termina siendo al final es tan excelente que es difícil no acertar a la primera. Otra cosa que me gusta mucho es la manera tan equilibrada de mezclar el drama con la comedia y el romance a lo largo de esta película. Vemos a algunos personajes vivir experiencias como nunca antes lo hemos visto vivir como lo es Ron Weasley con el amor, por ejemplo. Lo mismo sucede con nuestro protagonista, quien llega a congeniar más con la hermana menor de Ron, por cierto. No voy a negar que hubo momentos un tanto absurdos, pero a la vez graciosos. También tenemos algunos detalles con respecto al guión de la película, como lo es el caso de los Armarios Evanescentes y su función, además del tema de la misión de Draco Malfoy. Y hablando de misión, está la misión que le entrega Albus a Harry al principio de la película. Solo les diré que Harry no es muy bueno para sacarle información a alguien, de verdad. But I don’t think it’s any more serious than the film’s visual style itself, to be honest. Still, I won’t deny that every time I’ve watched this movie since I was a teenager, I’ve had a lot of fun. Whether it’s because of its dramatic moments, its romantic scenes, or its fantastical scenes of Harry and Dumbledore going “on a journey.” The movie manages to give us a complete rollercoaster of emotions and settings of all kinds and for all tastes. The performances, while not the most remarkable, I admit have also improved a lot compared to the previous installments of this saga. I admit I did miss the absence of one or two beloved characters, but this only confirms just how much their performances captivated me back then. I’m not going to say it has the best cast in the world, but at least they managed to connect very well with the audience. Especially Harry Potter, whom we saw acting like a typical 16-year-old—which is what he’s supposed to be in this movie—and that wasn’t so bad after all. I admit that his bad luck with love and with saving his loved ones is a bit heartbreaking, but there are moments when there’s simply no other explanation than the script itself.

Pero bueno, no voy a negar que todas las veces que he visto esta película desde que era adolescente me he divertido bastante. Ya sea por sus momentos dramáticos, sus escenas de romance o sus escenas fantásticas de Harry y Dumbledore yendo “de viaje”. La película logra darnos un completo carrusel de emociones y escenarios de todo tipo y para todo los gustos. Las actuaciones, si bien no son de lo más destacable, admito que también han mejorado mucho en comparación con las entregas anteriores de esta saga. Admito que llegué a extrañar la ausencia de uno que otro personaje entrañable, pero esto solo afirma lo mucho que me fascinó su actuación en su momento. No voy a decir que tiene el mejor elenco del mundo, pero por lo menos consiguieron empatizar muy bien con el público. I’ll just say that this sixth installment is very special, simply because a certain key character has one of the most heartbreaking and emotional story arcs and endings in the entire series. Obviously, I won’t mention any names so as not to spoil anything for you; I’ll just say that it’s a character you’ll love from the very beginning of the movie and cry over by the end. I’ll admit that, for what little they managed to adapt here, they did it very well. I say this mainly because of the audiovisual aspect, which is something that stands out ONLY if we set aside the issue of the dark and gloomy tone the movie has overall. As for the direction and production, it’s fascinating—I say this especially because of the way they use the cameras and the shots they show us. We see that they rely heavily on fixed cameras, which really highlights the details of each scene, its setting, and the characters. I also really like the way they seamlessly blend cinematography styles, movement, and transitions with sound effects and even certain sounds from the soundtrack.

Esta vez no les hablaré mucho sobre las diferencias que hay entre esta película y su obra literaria original ya que, como les dije varias veces, no he leído ninguno de los libros de Harry Potter. Solo diré que esta sexta entrega es muy especial, únicamente por el hecho de que cierto personaje importante tiene uno de los desarrollos y finales más desgarradores y emotivos de toda esta historia. Obviamente no diré nombres para no darles ningún spoiler, solo les diré que es un personaje que, desde el principio de la película, amarán y llorarán al final. Admito que, lo poco que han conseguido adaptar aquí, lo hicieron muy bien. Lo digo mayormente por su apartado audiovisual, lo cual es algo que llama la atención SOLO si dejamos de lado el temita del tono oscuro y opaco que posee la película en general. En cuanto a dirección y producción es fascinante, lo digo sobre todo por la forma en la que utilizan las cámaras y los planos que nos muestran. Vemos que recurren mucho a las cámaras fijas, lo cual hace destacar bastante los detalles de cada escena, su entorno y los personajes. También me gusta mucho la forma en la que mezclan bien los estilos de fotografía, movimiento y transiciones con los efectos de sonido y hasta ciertos sonidos de la banda sonora, inclusive.

Anyway, here’s the sixth installment of Harry Potter. Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the fantasy, drama, mystery, and romance genres.
