Okay, well, there were countries certainly looking to take advantage of France in its moment of weakness (like a teen age prom queen who has too much to drink at the after party). But the end does not justify the means. As a military tactician, Napoleon was right to take the fight to the enemy. However, as a politician, "restoring order" is in the eye of the beholder. One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

I'm not a fan of autocrats. The Enlightenment, and a passionate Puritanical Christian base willing to die for each other to obtain the cause, gave us what was America. Abraham Lincoln and the Roosevelts gave us what it is today. Perhaps Napoleon can be credited with restoring peace in France, but at what cost? If he truly was the honest and heroic broker you make him out to be, he'd have partnered with Lafayette to make France a replica of America's Democratic Republic--without the bipartisan power grab. Instead of selling Louisiana to fund his wars, he might have instead offered Lafayette a cabinet position for assisting in setting up a government with similar divisions of power and associated checks and balances as the U.S. But he chose to centralize all power in himself thereby ensuring the French would never receive the liberty they hoped for and would have gladly sacrificed for.
