The Cleveland Browns are 5–2, sitting in first place in the AFC North, and suddenly the question isn’t whether Cleveland can compete. It’s whether the Browns can actually win the division.
For a franchise that hasn’t celebrated a division championship since 1989, the opportunity is significant.
The Browns have never won the AFC North since the division was established in 2002. But seven games into the 2026 season, Cleveland controls its own destiny.
After Sunday’s dramatic 27–24 victory over the Tennessee Titans, the Browns remain in first place, and the race is getting interesting.
🏆 AFC North Standings After Week 7
Team W–L Division 🟠 Cleveland Browns 5–2 2–0 Pittsburgh Steelers 5–2 1–1 Cincinnati Bengals 4–2 1–1 Baltimore Ravens 4–3 0–2
Cleveland owns the head-to-head advantage over Pittsburgh after defeating the Steelers 27–24 on October 1.
Even more importantly, Cleveland has already defeated Baltimore 13–10.
Two divisional games. Two victories.
That is a promising foundation for a team hoping to capture its first AFC North crown.
But the competition is far from finished.
🔥 Why the Browns Have a Real Chance
- Cleveland Knows How to Win Close Games
One of the biggest surprises of the 2026 season has been Cleveland’s ability to finish games.
Consider their five victories:
Opponent Score Tampa Bay Buccaneers W 23–19 Carolina Panthers W 21–18 Pittsburgh Steelers W 27–24 Baltimore Ravens W 13–10 Tennessee Titans W 27–24
Every Cleveland victory has come by four points or fewer.
That’s remarkable.
Under head coach Todd Monken, the Browns have developed a reputation for staying competitive and finding ways to win in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson has led five game-winning drives in Cleveland’s first five victories.
And kicker Andre Szmyt has become one of the team’s most important contributors, delivering three game-winning field goals.
Winning close games demonstrates resilience. But relying on last-minute heroics every week is dangerous.
Eventually, Cleveland needs to win without requiring a final-minute comeback.
- Deshaun Watson Is Showing Signs of Improvement
Against Tennessee, Watson delivered his first 300-yard passing performance as a Cleveland Brown.
His numbers:
- 308 passing yards
- 25 completions on 36 attempts
- One rushing touchdown
- Another game-winning drive
Wide receiver KC Concepcion Jr. contributed eight receptions for 129 yards.
Running back Quinshon Judkins added two rushing touchdowns.
The Browns finished with 491 total net yards, their highest offensive output of the season.
That’s encouraging because Cleveland has struggled to produce consistent offense.
Through seven games, the team has scored 133 points, averaging just 19 points per game.
For Cleveland to win the division, its offense must become more productive and consistent.
- The Defense Can Compete With Division Rivals
Cleveland’s defensive performance against Baltimore demonstrated what this team can accomplish.
The Browns held the Ravens to 10 points and 235 total yards in their October 18 victory.
Players such as Carson Schwesinger and Denzel Ward continue to provide important defensive contributions.
Ward recorded his 20th career interception during the victory over Tennessee.
However, Cleveland’s defense has also shown weaknesses.
Titans running back Tony Pollard rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday.
Allowing opponents to establish the running game could become a serious problem against physical AFC North teams.
⚠️ What Could Prevent Cleveland From Winning?
Despite their impressive record, there are reasons to remain cautious.
Through Week 7, Cleveland has scored 133 points while allowing 146.
That’s a minus-13 point differential.
Compare that with their closest divisional competitors:
Team Point differential Cincinnati Bengals +41 Pittsburgh Steelers +15 Baltimore Ravens +2 Cleveland Browns -13
The Browns have won more games than their scoring margin would normally suggest.
That doesn’t mean their victories are undeserved. It means Cleveland has little margin for error.
A team that depends heavily on close finishes can quickly lose ground when turnovers, injuries, penalties, or defensive breakdowns become more frequent.
Cleveland must improve its early-game execution, protect the football, and establish a more consistent running attack.
Health will also matter. Offensive line injuries and defensive depth concerns could become increasingly important during the second half of the season.
🏈 Pittsburgh Is Cleveland’s Biggest Immediate Test
Sunday, November 1, 2026
Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers
Kickoff: 1:00 PM ET
This could be one of the most important games of Cleveland’s season.
Both teams enter the matchup with identical 5–2 records.
If Cleveland wins, the Browns improve to 6–2 while Pittsburgh falls to 5–3.
Cleveland would also complete a season sweep of the Steelers and improve to 3–0 within the division.
That would be an enormous advantage in a tight AFC North race.
But Pittsburgh enters on a three-game winning streak, and winning on the road will not be easy.
A Steelers victory would put Pittsburgh ahead in the standings and split the season series.
This is exactly the kind of matchup that separates playoff contenders from division champions.
📅 Four Divisional Games Remain
Cleveland’s remaining AFC North schedule includes:
- November 1: At Pittsburgh Steelers
- December 6: vs. Cincinnati Bengals
- December 27: At Baltimore Ravens
- Week 18: At Cincinnati Bengals
Those four games could determine everything.
Cincinnati deserves particular attention. The Bengals are 4–2 and just defeated Baltimore 35–13, with Joe Burrow throwing four second-half touchdown passes.
The Browns haven’t played Cincinnati yet this season, meaning those two matchups could have major implications for the division title.
Baltimore should not be dismissed either. A 4–3 record leaves the Ravens very much in contention.
Winning the AFC North will require more than beating non-divisional opponents.
Cleveland must continue winning within its own division.
📊 My Prediction: Can Cleveland Actually Do It?
Yes, the Browns can win the AFC North.
They are already leading the division and have victories over two direct competitors.
But having a legitimate chance is different from being the favorite to finish first.
The defense must become more consistent. Watson needs to sustain his improved passing production. Judkins and the running game must give Cleveland reliable offensive balance.
Most importantly, the Browns need to reduce their dependence on fourth-quarter comebacks.
My outlook: Cleveland is a legitimate AFC North contender, but the November 1 matchup against Pittsburgh will reveal a great deal about whether this team can maintain its lead.
A victory in Pittsburgh would strengthen the argument that Cleveland can finish the job.
A defeat would make the road considerably more difficult.
🏆 Could 2026 Finally End Cleveland’s Division Title Drought?
Browns fans have experienced decades of disappointment, rebuilding, coaching changes, and seasons that ended well before January.
The last division title came in 1989, when Cleveland competed in the AFC Central.
Now, 37 years later, an opportunity is developing.
There are still ten regular-season games remaining. Plenty can change between October and January.
But Cleveland has already demonstrated something important:
The Browns can compete with the best teams in their division.
The next challenge is proving they can do it consistently.
And if Cleveland can win the AFC North for the first time, Browns fans will have plenty to celebrate.
