A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! 🥳🥳🥳 WOO!
There is one phrase from the new WOO Ranked update that really stands out to me, and it is probably one of the simplest ideas in the entire announcement. You press Play Ranked. WOO gives you the next eligible fight. That's it.
There is no scrolling through a list of opponents. There is no deciding which player looks easiest. There is no looking at six different rosters and thinking, "I'll take that one because I like my chances."
Instead, WOO is introducing FIFO matchmaking for Async Ranked. First In, First Out. The oldest eligible pending Ranked Show that you did not create becomes your fight.
I think this is an important part of the system because asynchronous matchmaking could easily have created a problem if players were allowed to choose their opponents. Once you allow people to select from a list of pending Shows, the competitive ladder can quickly become about finding favourable matchups rather than simply playing the game.
WOO has taken the opposite approach. The Promoter creates the Show without knowing who will challenge it. The Challenger accepts the oldest eligible Show without knowing who created it. That makes the whole process feel much more impartial. It also means that creating a Show becomes a commitment rather than a way of advertising yourself to potential opponents.
When you become the Promoter, WOO generates your match conditions and random match budget. You construct your lineup and submit it. Your Show then enters the pending queue.
At that point, your wrestlers and cards are locked. You can see the match budget, venue, number of locked cards, submitted wrestlers and remaining time, but you cannot see who will eventually challenge you.
That mystery works both ways. When another player becomes the Challenger, they don't get your name. They don't get your roster. They don't get to compare your Show against another pending Show. They simply get the oldest eligible one.
I think that makes Ranked feel more like a genuine ladder and less like a marketplace. There is a natural temptation in competitive games to search for the easiest possible route. If you know exactly what you're going to face, you can start planning around it. If you can choose between several opponents, you can potentially avoid the difficult matchups.
WOO's system takes that choice away.
Personally, I think that is a good thing for the structure of this particular mode because the entire point of Ranked is progression through a competitive seasonal ladder. If everyone could selectively choose their opponents, the meaning of that progression could become harder to interpret.
The FIFO system doesn't promise that every matchup will be perfectly equal. It isn't supposed to. Instead, it creates a straightforward rule for deciding who fights whom. The oldest eligible Show goes first.
That is easy to understand and difficult to misunderstand. It also gives the pending queue a purpose. A player who creates a Show isn't just leaving it floating around somewhere hoping somebody notices. It becomes part of an ordered matchmaking system.
The longer that Show waits, assuming it remains eligible, the closer it gets to being selected. And that brings us back to the 24 hour expiration period.
A pending Show can remain available for up to 24 hours. If nobody challenges it during that period, it expires and the cards unlock.
That is another sensible part of the design because the system is asking players to commit NFTs to their Show. If you have selected a wrestler and locked them into the pending lineup, you can't simply sell, transfer, undelegate or level up that NFT without affecting the Show. Those actions will cause the pending Show to be cancelled. That means players need to think about what they are committing.
I actually like that element because it reinforces the idea that creating a Ranked Show is a proper competitive decision.
You are not just clicking a button and putting your name into a queue. You are building a team. You are committing your cards. You are saying, "This is the Show I am putting forward." Then you wait to see who answers.
The Challenger has a different responsibility. They don't have to create a Show if one is already waiting. They simply take the next eligible fight. They receive the same match budget the Promoter received and construct their own lineup.
Again, no scouting. No opponent shopping. No choosing the convenient fight. That makes the actual roster-building decision more important. If I don't know what is waiting for me, I need to think about my own strategy rather than someone else's.
That could lead to some interesting differences between players. One person might prefer a safer, balanced lineup. Another might take a more specialised approach. Someone else might be willing to gamble their budget on a particular combination.
And because neither player knows the other's lineup beforehand, those choices remain genuine decisions rather than reactions to visible information.
Then comes the reveal. Once the Challenger submits their team, the match becomes locked. The Mystery Opponent is revealed, both teams appear, and the Ranked Show can be simulated.
I think that reveal could become one of the fun little moments of Async Ranked.
You might build your Show in the morning and then later discover that someone has answered it. Or you might log in after dinner, press Play Ranked, receive a Mystery Opponent and suddenly find yourself wondering what kind of lineup is waiting.
That uncertainty is part of the appeal. The new system doesn't remove competition. It removes some of the awkwardness surrounding competition.
You don't have to find somebody at the same moment. You don't have to browse for an opponent. You don't have to sit around waiting for a matchmaking spinner. You simply play the next fight available to you.
For me, that is a very clean philosophy for WOO Ranked.
Build your Show when you have time. Take someone else's Show when you have time. Let the system handle the matchmaking. And most importantly, let the competition remain about the wrestlers and cards you selected rather than your ability to hunt for the most convenient opponent.
There is something quite satisfying about that. The ladder decides the next fight. You just have to step into the ring.
Well, that's it for today. We will continue again tomorrow! 😁 WOO! 🎉
