Everyone Is Probably Too Busy Playing Ranked In WOO This Weekend
A Big Hello to all WOO Fans! 🥳🥳🥳 WOO!
I have another theory about why WOO seems so quiet this weekend, and this one might actually make more sense than it sounds. Perhaps WOO is not quiet at all. Perhaps everybody is simply too busy playing Ranked to spend time talking about it.
I have gotten some feedback that reminders are pretty useful when it comes to the regular events held in WOO. So here I am again with a quick reminder for any upcoming events.
The timing is certainly convenient. We have just seen a major change to Ranked matchmaking, and the new Async Ranked system gives players a completely different way of approaching the ladder. Instead of waiting for another player to appear at the same time, players can now create their own Ranked Show, submit their lineup and leave it waiting for a challenger. That means there is suddenly a lot more reason to check the Ranked screen and see what is available.
And this is where I think the quiet weekend excuse writes itself.
Imagine somebody logging into WOO on Saturday morning. They see a pending Ranked Show waiting for a challenger, press Play Ranked and suddenly they have a match to prepare for. There is no need to browse through opponents or wait for somebody else to appear. WOO simply gives them the next eligible Show according to the new FIFO system. They build their lineup, submit it and get on with their day.
Now multiply that by a whole bunch of WOO players.
Maybe everyone is simply too busy climbing the ladder to worry about whether there is a weekend event. The Discord might be quieter, there might not be a big announcement every few hours and there may be no special weekend activity demanding everyone's attention, but that does not mean players have nothing to do.
In fact, I quite like the idea that the new system could make WOO feel busy without necessarily making WOO look busy. That is one of the interesting things about Async Ranked. Players no longer need to gather together at the same time for the competitive side of the game to function. Someone can build a Show while another player is asleep, and somebody else can eventually come along hours later and accept the challenge.
So perhaps this weekend is not an empty weekend at all. It is just a quieter one because the action has moved into the game itself.
There is also something amusing about the mystery opponent system. Nobody knows exactly who is waiting on the other side until both lineups have been committed. The Promoter does not know who will challenge them, and the Challenger does not know whose Show they are accepting. That gives players plenty to think about without needing another special event.
Maybe the real WOO weekend activity is simply people quietly wondering whether the next Ranked Show they accept is going to be easy, difficult or somewhere in between.
So if WOO seems strangely quiet this weekend, I am going with the obvious explanation. Everyone is probably too busy playing Ranked.
And if that turns out to be completely wrong, I am still sticking with it. It sounds convincing enough to me.
TLDR: This is a reminder to all my readers (and WOO fans) that baring any last minute sudden surprise events, this weekend should be a relatively quiet one. 😜
