I never really thought at some point in my life I would start a business or even be interested in starting one. That's why for this week's ladies of hive contest. I would like to go with this option.
Tell us about your venture, project, business, or plan to improve your economic situation. When the idea appeared, how did you make the business plan? Has it been difficult to find suppliers or inputs? Have customers identified with your service?
This idea of starting a business came to me because I found something I loved to do. I started my crochet business barely a month after I started learning crochet. Majorly because as I began to share some of my progress, a lot of my friends wanted me to make something for them also and then their friends too, so I sensed that there may be a demand for it and it would be a perfect side hustle.
My business plan was quite simple when someone places an order, they are required to make a 50% down payment, I get the supplies and do the job and they are required to pay the balance before delivery is made. I wanted it to be something small so that it doesn't clash with the other things I have going on. So I just wait for orders before getting anything done and on other occasions, I make things for myself.
Getting the supplies has been relatively easy. There's a local yarn store about an hour from my house and I go there to get yarn supplies whenever I need one. I got my crochet hooks from an online store, I also order online for those rare/foreign yarns.
One of the difficulties I face is the fact that I am not a very communicative person. I am more of an introvert and like to be on my own, so I find it hard to do some marketing/keeping in touch with people since I essentially know that will facilitate growth. Also, my social media presence is nothing to write home about, so there's no avenue for newer people to be aware of what I do. I am trying to fix that by taking it one at a time, for now, I'm starting with being more active on WhatsApp, then expanding from there.
It is more of a side hustle for me so I only do it when I can. Although I plan to expand when the time is right. For now, I want to leave it as a hobby/side hustle.
