I got into the Waterboys quite early in my life. I was born in the 80's and they rose to fame when I was a little kid. The band are Scottish but most of them live in Ireland and he's Mike Scott is the only rockstar I would pass by regularly on Grafton Street in Dublin. You would always know him with the hat he wore. He stood out as well with the clothes he wore so you knew he was someone that was flamboyant. The first song I ever heard from the Waterboys was the whole of the moon and it was one of my favourite songs growing up. Then when I hit college their song Fishermans Blues was a Celtic favourite and was played at every pub on St Patricks Day , and any other Irish Special occassion. Back in the old alcohol fueled 20's I used to hang out in a pub called the Quays in Templebar and there would be live music for the tourists and it would always be played.
I saw them live a good few times and I love when they play whole of the moon because they strip it back and you get Mike Scott at his best.

Fishermans Blues

As I said above, it would be a popular song in Ireland. For some reason we have adapted this song as somewhat of an anthem here. I am sure ablaze@ablaze will be in agreement. The lyrics are brilliant in this one as well.

Lyrics

I wish I was a fisherman
Tumblin' on the seas
Far away from dry land
And it's bitter memories
Castin' out my sweet line
With abandonment and love
No ceiling bearin' down on me
Save the starry sky above
With light in my head
With you in my arms
I wish I was the brakeman
On a hurtlin fevered train
Crashin head long into the heartland
Like a cannon in the rain
With the feelin of the sleepers
And the burnin of the coal
Countin the towns flashin by
And a night that's full of soul
With light in my head
With you in my arms
And I know I will be loosened
From the bonds that hold me fast
And the chains all around me
Will fall away at last
And on that grand and fateful day
I will take thee in my hand
I will ride on a train
I will be the fisherman
With light in my head
You in my arms
Light in my head
You in my arms
Light in my head
You
With light in my head
You in my arms

The Whole Of The Moon

Source

One of the best songs of the 80's in my opinion. What a song. Genius level here. The lad in the cowboy hat walking passed me in the street wrote this. I do always put my musical bands on somewhat of a pedestal. I would rather meet some of these than any sports star in my opinion.

Lyrics
I pictured a rainbow
You held it in your hands
I had flashes
But you saw the plan
I wandered out in the world for years
While you just stayed in your room
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
Hmm, you were there in the turnstiles, with the wind at your heels
You stretched for the stars and you know how it feels to reach too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
I was grounded
While you filled the skies
I was dumbfounded by truth
You cut through lies
I saw the rain dirty valley
You saw Brigadoon
I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
I spoke about wings
You just flew
I wondered, I guessed and I tried
You just knew
I sighed
But you swooned, I saw the crescent
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon
with a torch in your pocket and the wind at your heels
You climbed on the ladder and you know how it feels to get too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon
The whole of the moon, hey yeah!
Unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers
Trumpets, towers and tenements
Wide oceans full of tears
Flags, rags ferryboats
Scimitars and scarves
Every precious dream and vision
Underneath the stars, yes, you climbed on the ladder
With the wind in your sails
You came like a comet
Blazing your trail too high
Too far
Too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

Glastonbury Song

This is one song I always liked but never knew it was the Waterboys until I went to a gig in Limerick. Another 80's classic.

Lyrics
I dreamed myself from the sultry plains
To the old green square back in old Maybole
Rode the wind up to Stornaway
Paused at the peak, pacified my soul
Caught the bus in the fairy fort
Made it to the mansion on the Boyne
See I come around to the ancient ways
I took a tip from the buddha boy
I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god where he always was
We came down from the hill of dreams
Bernadette, mother earth and you and me
Through Carraroe, down the wildwood side
Blinding our eyes in the shallow seas
Drank fire with the King of the Blues
Plugged in to the medicine way
Took a long last look at Crazy Horse
Push now for a golden age
I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god where he always was
I found myself on the roof of the world
Just waiting for to get my wings
Strange angel in the changing light
Said "Brother, you forgot something"
My heart beat from the inside out
So lucky just to be alive
Can you tell what I'm talking about?
Any day now the sun's gonna rise
I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god
(I just found god)
Yeah, I just found god where he always was
Hey, you just found god where he always was
There is a green hill far away
I'm going back there one fine day
There is a green hill far away
I'm going back there one fine day
There is a green hill far away
I'm going back there one fine day
There is a green hill far away
I'm going back there one fine day
One fine day
One fine day
One fine day

So there you have it. Thanks again to ablaze@ablaze for doing this initiative and some of the guys that are partaking. I like having an aul listen when the missus is watching some bake off or sew off. captainquack22@captainquack22 gave us a great one this week with the video game solos.
