This week for Three Tune Tuesday which is an initiative started by ablaze@ablaze I want to talk about the band I have seen the most times out of anyone. It is an Irish band who I get to see once a year with my wife. The band is called Bell X1 and they are probably one of Ireland's best domestic bands that have not really made it abroad. Although they did reach global success with their song "Eve is the Apple Of My Eye" which featured in a Greys Anatomy love scene a good few years back and it propelled them to fame.
Bell X1 are myself and my wife's band. Our whole relationship started listening to Bell X1 and we dated at their concerts. A couple of songs remind me of our relationship starting out and we would always consider them our band. They are a band that would be romantic in a way with the soundly spoken lead singer voice of Paul Noonan. The band's lyrics in the songs are genius and they speak about normal things that happen to a person. A song called "West OF Her Spine" is all about giving the wife a massage. And another song called deflector takes about his wife's bra always setting off the x- ray machine at the airport. One genius lyric I found is

"You are the chocolate at the end of my Cornetto."

If you are not from Ireland you probably have not heard of any of the 3 songs that I will list below. I am actually going to see Bell X1 in Waterford in a couple of weeks. It is an acoustic gig and I am really looking forward to it. People ask me what was the best gig I was ever at and I will always say it was at a Bell X1 gig in the Olympia in Dublin. But the funny thing about it was that Bell X1 weren't the best band that night. There was a guy by the name of Conor O Brien with his band called the Villagers supporting them and he actually brought the house down. It was one of their first ever gigs and by the end of it people were standing there open mouthed. Bell X1 came on and apologized that they were not going to be as good as Conor. Conor went on to global success and won an Ivor Novello award in his own right. Anyway back to Bell X1.

Rocky Took A Lover

This song is about two homeless people having an argument. I love this one. It gets me all emotional for some reason. It's also an easy one to play on the guitar. Like all Bell X1 lyrics they are down to earth and at times funny

"Would ya go away and shite
Last night all you did was curse those stars
You said they sang to you of hope

Lyrics

He said 'I wanna shine in the eye of Orion
But I drove my soul through the Black Hole!'
She said 'What a wonderful way to wake me
You weren't so nice last night
You're such an asshole when you're drunk'
He said 'At least I'm OK in the mornings'
He said 'The three wise men came a long way
Following that pin hole in the sky
Yeah that one right there'
She said 'I don't believe in any old Jesus
If there was a God, then why is my arse
The perfect height of kicking?'
He said 'I'll shine for you, I'll burn for you
Yea I'll shine for you, that's what I'll do'
He said 'They're like headlights
In the rear view mirror
They're closer that they seem
And from this gutter we're still staring at the stars'
She said 'Would ya go away and shite
Last night all you did was curse those stars
You said they sang to you of hope'
He said 'The sun gives life, and it takes it away
But like all the greats, it'll burn out someday'
She said 'I don't mind, I don't want to get bored
I don't want to end up beached on this shore
I want to be that star'
And then I'll shine for you. Then I'll burn for you.
Then I can shine for you. That's what I'll do.

Bad Skin Day

Another song about daily life. This song is about acne would you believe!! Probably the best song about pimples that I know of anyway. But of course it is about way more than this. I quite liked the lock down version on Zoom where they sung it with a choir but I love this song at intimate venues. Again lyrics are unbelievable.

I could've got a job
I could've been a contender
'Cause the streak is only so long
They're all different shades of the same song

Lyrics

When I wake in the morning
Of a bad skin day
And I can't face my lover
On a bad skin day
Am I this alone?
Volcano has erupted
And the ash sails down
And I'm a poor soul of Pompeii
Oh Christ, I'm such a drama queen
On a bad skin day
And you're far from me
You're all far from me
Right where I want you to be
Far from me
I could've got a job
I could've been a contender
'Cause the streak is only so long
They're all different shades of the same song
There's a wind in these sails
For the gold in them there hills
Them there hills
And they're far from me
Someday we'll all wear a crown
Far from me
Someday we'll be the fairest of them all
No I'm far from me
Someday we'll have an open top bus parade
Far from me
Someday we'll do the sorry charade
It feels like we're always waiting
It feels like we're never leaving
It feels like we're always waiting
It feels like we're never leaving
It feels like we're always waiting
It feels like we're never leaving
It feels like we're always waiting
It feels like we're never
Far from me
Someday we'll all wear a crown
Far from me
Someday we'll be the fairest of them all
No I'm far from me
Someday we'll have an open top bus parade
Far from me
Someday we'll do the sorry charade
Far from me
Someday we'll all wear a crown
Far from me
Someday we'll be the fairest of them all
So far from me
Someday we'll have an open top bus parade
Far from me
Someday we'll do the sorry charade
It feels like we're always waiting
It feels like we're never leaving
It feels like we're never leaving
It feels like we're never leaving

Next To You

Ah the song that reminds me of my wife. I just love this one. This is the song that reminds me of my wife for some reason. Probably the best version is the album version of this one because it was produced well and I like the brass at the end.

Lyrics

It was part of our experiment
When you said go and I went
like a gooseberry on Noah's ark
I watched them file in two by two
And I set sail without you
And we were carried on the flood of your tears
Time pulls a face when I'm next to you
Let's hope the wind changes
Time pulled a face when I'm next to you
Let's hope the wind changes
Now I'm looking for dry land
As all this crying subsides
But I'm like Columbus in India
I'm a little all over the shop
Like those souvenirs from Knock
that come all the way from China
Time pulls a face when I'm next to you
Let's hope the wind changes
Time pulled a face when I'm next to you
Let's hope the wind changes
'Cos we'd be stuck in this place
For an age or two
I hope the wind changes
And the vacuum in space will draw me to you
I hope the wind changes
I'm not over you, can I get back under

So that is my three tunes for this week. Look forward to hearing yours.
