Three Tune Tuesday - Pub Songs

The Irish have a history of liking drink, music and pubs. I am a family man now and bearly get to see the inside of one any more. But during my 20's and early 30's I had a great time in them. My father once said to me

I was a social drinker and loved the chat and the music more than the drink itself. Many pubs in my hometown have Irish traditional music in them. These can range from just instrumentals, such as two lads with a fiddle and a guitar in the corner or a full blown 25 man Irish session where there are instruments being played that have been invented in gargages to make a particular sound. The good thing about these gigs is that you could bring down an instrument yourself and join in. It really hones your musical skills such as playing the guitar in different keys.

So today we are going to listen to three songs that are pretty much pubs songs from traditional Irish bands. One band in particular called the Dubliners. These songs were mostly sung in pubs and are mostly for pubs.

A pub With No Beer - The Dubliners

So what would you do if a pub had no beer. That is the question. The Dubliners sing about this scenario in a song called a Pub With No Beer. (No dogs were injured in this song)

Seven Drunken Nights - The Dubliners

Seven Drunken nights is about a man coming home from the pub every night in the space of a week. Clearly his wife or partner has got sick of his drinking so she elopes with another man. Over the course of the song , the man realises that things are not as they seem. One of the funniest songs around by the way. It is very funny. In real pubs the chorus gets a massive reception and everyone sings it. It is an amazing song and it's one of Ireland's greatest ever comical songs.

Weila Weile Waile - The Dubliners

I really like the actual music to all these traditional songs whether they are kind of jokey or not. They never seem that serious. Take this song for example. It's about a woman living in a wood who killed her baby with a penknife. Oh my god you think. But I have to say the song is pretty dam catchy. I chose this one because the Dubliners are in their natural habitat singing it. In the pub. I love being at these kind of sessions where some auld lad with a beard is singing. I was thinking of growing a beard and not having a shower or a bath and smelling of fags (I don't smoke) and being like these guys. They seemed to have a great old life touring pubs and singing about everything and anything. They even got away with songs about baby murder.

So that's it from me this week for Three Tune Tuesday. Not songs you would all know. I bet my friend @wannabescrapper and @captainquack22 would get a kick out of these Irish trad songs about pubs with no beer and seven drunken nights.
