Messy Skirt

Gorgeous, right?! That my dear steemies is a banana flower. The lower part of the banana cluster. Is not supposed to look like that, its supposed to look straight and closed but with my hellish weather of 48-50C it ended like that. It looks like a messy skirt and I think it looks way pretty that way. I have several banana trees in my yard, thanks to that I have free bananas the entire year and always see something new when it comes to the growing process.

First comes the "cocoon" a long closed flower, then when the flower opens lots of little bananas with tiny yellow flowers attached to their butts comes up. While they are growing the flower in their butts grows in a form of a spoon and bees comes to drink their nectar cause the flowers doesn't have pollen, is more like watery sugar. Bees loves to drink that! At the end of the banana cluster a not so tiny purple flower hangs closed. Some people eats that in salad but I must confess I never try it. That flower is in charge of the growing of the bananas, if you cut that thing the bananas will stop growing and they will get ripe quick so leave that thing alone if you want big bananas!

When the fruit reach the point they won't grow more their flowers dry and fell, that's why all bananas butts are black. Then in 1-2 months more they will be ripe and ready to eat. The whole process (of the plant growing and the bananas) can take up to a year but if you have a crazy weather like I do that time can be reduced to 6 months. The last thing you cut is the flower.... wait, I was gonna write about the flower and make several jokes but ended giving a banana tutorial! Jeez!
