According to what I read in the story, and the prompt, they likely think the pods "power" the guns, or dispose of any debris the guns produce maybe? I mean in the story, they know the pods are there. Maybe may not notice a pod leaving on occasion? Unless they think the pods are going off for "free maintenance"?
