I kinda feel bad for the guy. He only did what he had to do to help save the lands from the attackers. He knew that if the palace was overrun, eventually, the vicerene and everyone else would end up killed, or worse. And now he feels guilty for it. I don't think they're trying to punish him for it, but reward him.
