This reminds me of learning to overcome my storm phobia. I used to be so bad I'd all but faint during a bad storm. Nearly lost my job at a call center when there was a hail storm and I panicked while on a call, hung up on a customer, and ran to the bathroom to throw up. Fortunately, the supervisor I had at the time realized what was going on and didn't reprimand me, though my team lead was on my backside about it, the supervisor didn't allow the team lead to go after me for it.
Due to being forced to drive during storms, I've managed to curb the terror instinct some, but my heart still races, and I still shake, if there's a lot of wind during the storm. And if there's hail? I still get close to hyperventilating. I CAN curb it if I'm driving, I'll just focus on the road, but once I stop? I still freak out, sadly.
