Cappies are good pets BUT, there are some problems to owning them. The biggest, of course, being what the local rules and regs say. Second, you should never own just ONE capybara. These animals need to have others of their own kind around or can stress out badly. So it's highly recommended to have two or more as they are, in essence, similar to herd animals. Also, they love water, so it's highly recommended there is water there for the animals to relax in. The capybara also can be very destructive. Their teeth, as with many rodents, constantly grow. So, for the animals' health, the animals must have foods, and enrichment items, that they can chew on and grind down the front teeth. Without such things, the capybara will start chewing on anything, well, chewable. And therefore can destroy their habitat.
