Maybe, deep down, he enjoys the loving kindness of having someone fuss over him like that. But he's been hurt so much in his own past that he can't bring himself to enjoy it too much, knowing the pain it will bring him due to outliving the ones he loves? Or, worse, knowing that there are those that try to target those he loves?
