I read history books of those who had lived their entire lives in slavery working for masters in the fields. After the emancipation proclamation, and all slaves were freed, many, for a long time, would not leave their master's homes, would not disobey their masters, and continued to live as a slave in the fields. Because it was all they knew and the idea of leaving it frightened them.
