The midsummer sauna tradition makes sense as a ritual because it marks a change in season with the body, not just the calendar.
There is something different about traditions that involve heat, water, weather, and a specific day. They make time feel physical. That is probably why they survive longer than more abstract celebrations.
It is also interesting how much local identity gets carried through small seasonal habits like this.
