A Blackbird flock in the winter. Mostly Red-winged Blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus
Many of our North American blackbirds form large mixed flocks in the non-breeding season. Although many of these species migrate to areas not close to their breeding locations, most are not long distance migrants.
Red-winged Blackbirds generally breed in moist areas, especially preferring cattail marshs, but are a widespread generalist much of the year.
I am just starting to see flocks of blackbirds forming again as the summer breeding season comes to a close.
Sorting through a blackbird flock looking for a rare Rusty Blackbird or an out-of-range grackle is a birders chore in winter near where I live in Washington.
Good birding.
