you can do a lot with not top of the line equipment, but there are things that are really hard and better equipment would help. could you photograph a sport event with a manual focusing lens, yap, did that, not easy, missed a lot :)

could you photograph a lion on a safari with a 35mm. probably, it would be a great photo if you still alive to edit it :)
