Also called Chinese timber bamboo, our Phyllostachys Vivax, kept us on the edge of our seat and started putting out shoots the last of all other varieties, knowing full well, it will catch up to all with it measured daily growth rate of up to 11cm !
if you sit there patiently, you can literally see it grow !
these leaves in the above photo that wrap-protect the culm (cane) as it shoots up are called Culm Sheath and they eventually dry out and fall off exposing the perfect green cane below.
Standing at over 5m. tall with culms of about 4cm to 5cm in diameter, it is still nowhere near its full genetic potential.
growing in its optimal climatic conditions, this bamboo can reach over 21m. in height and over 12cm in diameter. in our challenging climate, time will tell, but it still seems very promising.
with seven existing culms and 15 new shoots (and counting), this bamboo is giving it all and is literally about to duplicate its volume !
the shoots come out in different sizes and grow in different rates, as a general rule, the thicker the shoot, the faster the growth rate.
I guess-timate the thicker ones to be close to 5cm in diameter.
and they grow fast. in a matter of days they are already somewhere between 50 and 65cm !
this groove that is left in the culm once the branches open outward is called Sulcus and is a very indicative identification mark of the Phyllostachys family.
thank you for stopping by 🙏
wishing us all a peaceful rest of the week.
