You require about 256MB of RAM (depending on the host) and ether a 2nd hard disk or an option to boot from any other boot medium.
You dont need to use Windows XP, you can do this also through a dual booted linux or a linux from livecd/liveusb preferably with a persistent mode so you dont have to set all up again.
I prefer Windows XP, because i can cross test applications and drivers and copy files from Windows XP if needed.
