Movie: Joker (2019)
Genre: Thriller, Drama
Director: Todd Phillips
Cast: Joaquin Phoenix
Synopsis: Joker centers around an origin of the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Todd Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale. (Imdb)
Review: This will surely turn out to be the most memorable movie I've had the pleasure of watching this year (Definitely). It made me reflects on myself, my friends, the world around me and how easy it is for any one of us to fall apart, how quickly we can go from rational animals to untamable beasts and when surrounded with others who feed that animal we can become feral, we act in a pack mentality and well it's all down to how we handle the crazy world around us. It's been a long time since a film has reflected so many things in a way that doesn't feel convuluted or formulaic, it asks all the questions, it ticks all the boxes and then draws a line through almost all of it. Sure, at its core it's an origin movie, it's Arthur Fleck, it's the joker, he's the darkness to Batman's light, but much more than that, he's the flaw in all of us, the days we hide from the world, the child in us that puts salt on a slug to see the reaction, the equilibrium to a world that's clearly not controllable.
Joker is simply a masterpiece in its own way, it reminds us of its relevance and in years to come a film many will return to, just to remind ourselves of how much the world can change if everyone worked together instead of against each other. It's breathtaking in many ways, go and see it, you'll only regret not witnessing it if you don't. Not to be left out - with the masterful direction of Todd Phillips and a fully committed career best performance from its lead, Joaquin Phoenix, together they have crafted a masterpiece.
