Work ethics - Changes from 15 years ago
Hello Steemers, maybe this will give you an insight how it was earlier.
Fifteen years ago it was rare to see people not call into work and advise their boss that they would not be in. In fact, in most cases it was rare for people to call in sick. Jump ahead fifteen years and has changed. I have seen an increase from just 7 percent sick rate to upwards of 30 percent.
These numbers are personal numbers from the Call Center industry. Talking to other business men and women from other industries, the numbers seem to be increasing all over.
It was rare to see someone not call in and advise that they would not be in for their shift. You would see this maybe one time a month for a workforce of 200 or so. Now with a much younger workforce we are seeing this jumping up to 5 to 10 each and every day.
On the other hand we would schedule for 3 percent of our workforce to be out at any given day. Now we need to schedule 25 percent more to keep up with our average of 20 to 25% absenteeism.
Then we have our long time employees that religiously show up on time for each and every shift. The high absenteeism is not fair to them, as we are constantly asking for extra hours or even overtime. Some people really appreciate the extra hours, but for many they get burnt out quick from working a lot of extra hours.
