Welcome back to another instalment of Woodworking Wednesdays. Today, we are coming back to some of the pending projects in the workshop. We are starting with the bridge for the first concert-type Venezuelan Cuatro made by yours truly.

Working with regional woods gives us the chance to get to see some vibrant colours. This is a kind of oak. Don't ask me about species. Haven't found out about it yet. However, you can see it has a deep red/orange hues. Since other parts of the instrument have the same kind of wood, it is fitting to make a bridge of the same material to stay in tone.
To start, we need to measure the action of the strings. We can do this with a ruler and using a piece of wood on the strumming guard with the desired height. This gives us an estimate of the height of the bridge and saddle. Here, it's 1cm in total. The bridge will have 7mm and the saddle will have 3mm over those to have the action that both comfortable and gives a nice volume.
After this step, we can start with the dimensions of the bridge. First, we cut it to length. That's 13cm. Next, we sand the faces to make them smooth and decide which will face up. The last step is to reduce the width of the bridge to 2cm. This one we can do pretty easily with a planer. Just look at those shavings!

With the piece ready for heavy work, we start with markings everywhere. Notice we made some markings on the depth side to mark the wholes for the strings and the total height of the bridge. Also, we add the guide for the saddle rest.
Next thing is to mark the wings and get all the cuts to start the shaping of the whole piece. We make several cuts, then use a chisel to remove material. We don't need to pay too much attention to leaving the cuts on the winds since we need to use a rasp and file to finish the shaping on the bridge. Plus, we still need to make the saddle rest and the other cuts on the top side of the bridge.

Now, it's time time to file the wings and give them a roundish top. We can achieve this by using different angles with the file and only stroking in one direction. That way we can control the amount of pressure we apply and how much material we remove.
The next step is to use a saw to cut on the markings we made with our caliper. This is the saddle rest and the ramp for the strings. Once we have made the cuts, we remove the unnecessary material with chisel and other files.
And that's all for now!
Next time, we'll do some other work on the bridge. We still need to get the holes for the strings, apply a coat of oil and glue it on the instrument!

Bienvenidos de regreso a la sección Miércoles de Carpintería. Hoy, volvemos a los proyectos pendientes del taller. Estamos comenzando a trabajar en el puente de un instrumento muy especial. Este es el primer cuatro de concierto del taller.

Trabajar con maderas regionales nos da la oportunodad de ver algunos colores muy exóticos. Esta es una especie de roble que se conoce como Roble María. No me pregunten cual es el nombre exacto de la especie porque no lo sé. Sin embargo, pueden apreciar su color naranja rojizo muy intenso. Esto lo mantiene en el tono que tienen otras partes del instrumento.
Para comenzar, hay que tomar la medida para la altura de las cuerdas. Esto se hace con una regla y una pieza de madera que tenga una referencia de altura sobre el golpeador del instrumento. Así tenemos un estimado de la altura que necesitamos en el puente y la cejilla. En este caso, es de 1cm en total. La altura de la cejilla y el puente debe sumar esta cantidad. Así que tendremos un puente de 7mm y una cejilla que va a sobresalir 3mm por encima del puente. Con esto, la altura de las cuerdas será muy cómoda sin comprometer el volumen del instrumento.
Después de hacer esto, podemos comenzar con las dimensiones del puente. Primero, hay que cortarlo a lo largo. Eso son 13cm. Luego, lijamos las caras del listón para determinar cual irá hacia arriba. Lo última es rebajar el ancho de la pieza hasta 2cm. Esto es fácil de hacer con unas pasadas del cepillo. ¡Miren la viruta tan hermosa que nos deja!

Ahora estamos listos para el trabajo difícil. Es tiempo de dejar las marcas de guía. Miren que hacemos unas por el lado del espesor para marcar la altura del puente y por donde se harán los agujeros de las cuerdas. Además, agregamos las marcas para los canales que tendrá en la cara superior.
Lo próximo es marcar el corte para las alas del puente y comenzar a darle forma. Esto lo hace con varios cortes para posteriormente remover el material de exceso con un formón. Aquí no tenemos que preocuparnos por remover completamente hasta las marcas. Eso lo haremos luego con una lima. Además, faltan los cortes en la cara superior.

Ahora, hay que limar las alas para darles una forma redondeada. Esto se hace con distintos ángulos de acción con la lima y moviéndonos simpre en un solo sentido. Así tenemos más control sobre la cantidad de material que removemos y la presión que aplicamos sobre la madera.
El paso siguiente es utilizar un serrucho para hacer cortes en las marcas que tenemos para la cejilla y la rampa para las cuerdas. Una vez que hayamos cortado sobre estas marcas, podemos remover el material sobrante con un formón y otra lima.

En la próxima entrega haremos otros trabajos sobre el puente. Todavía hace falta abrir los agujeros para las cuerdas, aplicar el acabado y pegarlo al instrumento.
