Hello there, my fellow artisans and handcrafts enthusiasts!
We are back for the final part of this project. Or is it? Let me walk you through the last bits of work I've been doing on this instrument and what happened next.
New Nut

Since I removed the 0th fret, I had to make a new nut and find a way to fit it in place. So, I took a piece of purple heart and started to do the whole resizing, cutting and sanding until it got the looks of a nut for a Venezuelan Cuatro. After doing it, I had to figure out how to make another piece of wood to hold it in place.
I've seen many projects in which the nut is glued to the neck. That is an easy fix, but I like to be able to remove since we still need to work its height for the strings action.
New Hue

I bet you remember how poorly the finish was when this one came back to the workshop. I decided to use some ink to get a more even colour since the amount of gunk in the wood can be removed easily without compromising the structure. So, I went on an experimented on the ways of applying ink to this wood.
As you can see, I did a preliminary test to see how to use it. The sponge test was a failure as it doesn't mix well with thinner. So, I used a piece of cloth and no dilution. But as the colour wasn't even, I did go for my paint gun and tried out a mix of ink and sealant to work these two steps at the same time.
The results talk for themselves as the colour came out even. It is a very dark tone of mahogany. It's that way so it doesn't show when the instrument is dirty as the owner knows nothing about cleaning.
An issue

It was all well as I even did get my mood up to do some polishing on the sealant to get a better look on the instrument. But making something shiny that's not even going to receive its care makes no sense to me.
And these are the photos I sent the guy when the job was done. After a while, he came back to me with some very annoying comments. To summarize it, instead of telling me fair and square he didn't like the colour, he went on about asking for opinions and receiving the same answer about the hue being to dark and many other things.
He asked if I could make the colour clear. And by that I know he doesn't have common sense. Anyways, there's not been any more communication, but I have started to scrape the instrument once again to do the finish again.
And well, I'll have to see how it ends.
Not like we are back on square one since the repairs are done, but this is a lesson to never do anything extra for petty clients. Even when this instrument was made by me.
Sorry, Mardí, I tried.
Cuatro Desgastado II
