Many of us at some point in our lives have wondered, do I have a high IQ? Or am I one more of the bunch? Thinking that the success or the accomplishment of our goals depends on whether we inherit an innate aptitude for the intellectual activity. In this post I would like to show that in order to be outstanding characters in our community, As were Sir Isaac Newton or Aristotle, It is not absolutely necessary that we come to the world with a special talent. So let's start by defining What or Who is a gifted person?
The dictionary of the RAE defines Gifted as: "Who possesses qualities that exceed the normal, especially referring to the intellectual conditions"
Another interesting definition is provided by WHO (World Health Organization) which defines Gifted as: "The one with an IQ greater than 130" (referring to the Wechsler scale)
Many people still do not fully agree with these definitions since they imply that being gifted is not about something hereditary but rather a matter of discipline and personal development, while others think that being a genius is something hereditary and That the X chromosome is the one that brings the intelligence to the human being, in other words, that the women are the ones that give part of their intelligence and not the men. All this based on research done by some scientists like Ulrich Zechner who claim to have found on the X chromosome a set of genes with brain damage related to the development of cognitive abilities. Another character in which these people rely, is the scientist Robert Lehrke although some do not believe that he was a scientist as such, but rather a clinical psychologist who did not conduct an investigation based on the principles and methods of science. his work exposes that on the X chromosome there are different genes possessing information on the cognitive abilities or "genes of the intelligence", resulting in that many mental disabilities come from this chromosome. He also argues that if the woman has two of these chromosomes, intelligence will be averaged; Since if one X chromosome works correctly and the other does not, it will leave an average person, because the genes that exert their function would make a type of balance. This would explain why there is a larger percentage of men with mental disabilities and gifted men than women, And why in the studies conducted by Ulrich Zechner when applying the intellectual coefficient test in women, they obtain better results by doing a group test and averaging the results, than individually. Unlike men, the opposite case occurs.
On the other hand the journalist, biologist, doctor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Javier Yanes, in his article published on March 19, 2016, explains that the exposition by the American Robert Lehrke is not quite right because if it has been demonstrated That certainly many mental disabilities come from the X chromosome, but that the genes act by taking stock, no. If not rather that the gene that performs its functions is imposed on the one that is affected (in the same way that happens with the gene of the CF that I commented in an earlier post), which would explain why a good percentage of women they do not have mental disabilities and men do. Since the woman to have two X chromosomes has the facility that if one of the two is affected the other supplies the affected functions, but in the man there is no other X chromosome that serves as supplement, because as we all know the man owns the chromosomes XY. In the same way as the American biologist and geneticist Anne Fausto Sterling explains in her book "Gender myths: biological theories about women and men". Another thing that has diminished with respect to the said by Lehrke is that the type of trait as it is the intelligence is complex, so that it would not depend on a few genes but rather of many. And Increasingly are discovering less features that seem to be linked to a single gene.
Now there are two things we must keep in mind, the first: geniuses or intellectually gifted people are people who are not common but rather have something that sets them apart from others, and that something is simply a higher IQ To the majority of the world's population, whether it be a gifted intellectual or a polymath (a person who has talents in different scientific areas, not in one area). Second, at the end of everything, regardless of whether these people have managed to have intellectual abilities in a hereditary way or not. What is relevant is that if the person is not in the right environment to be able to develop personally and be formed with a character of discipline (Discipline as a set of rules whose compliance consistently lead to a certain outcome), The person will not be able to develop his skills and never become a "Genius".
Well... to what we came. My position is that to be a "gifted" we do not depend on having a specific gene, much less than if I inherited it from my mother or my father. At one time I came to think that I was simply not born to understand mathematics or physics, among other professorships. And that other classmates that if they were doing very well and even excellent, if they were born for that. All this thinking in a wrong way, thus stopping both my personal development and the learning process. The fact is that the realizations of your goals and the success of your life, does not depend on anything like being born being special. Of what if it depends is that you are a disciplined person and you strive in great way giving everything of you at all times and trusting in God that your reward will not be taken away from you. And a great example of this is the man considered by many as the father of modern physics, Albert Einstein who according to his biography did not have an excellent childhood to say that he was a child prodigy but that with dedication and discipline He came to succeed in the field of physics.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this post and that it serves as knowledge and inspiration. Never let yourself be discouraged by other colleagues thinking that they have a special ability that you do not have. Because it is proven you can become a person to stand out in your community, and why not... the next Stephen Hawking!
