A leader is someone who helps other people to discover purpose and direction in achieving a goal, especially in the midst of uncertainty. Leadership goes well beyond positions and titles. The leader inspires the team and brings their different skills into a composite whole.

A leader is not someone who knows everything, but rather the person who borrows wisdom from the people and things around him with the aim of giving direction to the team or group. On countless occasions my country, we have heard people especially the older generation say that young people are the leaders of the future. I find it really difficult to accept that proclamation for it sounds to me as a mere postponement of our leadership in the actual sense. Most people speak so because perhaps they identify the word leadership more with roles, positions and portfolios.

Building leadership will mean building teams to get the job done. Will change makers may have some experienced leaders already in their team, it is necessary to transfer this leadership across the team before such leaders phase out. Without effective transfer of leadership in our community, movements will always have the following scenarios, A leader in the centre who is always fatigued and drained because everyone in the team looks up to him/her for purpose and direction. Because the leader's energies are often not replenished, he/she can only reach out to a few people at a time. This can generate friction in a team since people who ,might not have enough access to the leader could become lethargic.

There could also be a case where everyone in the team is leading from different directions, resulting in chaos and disorder. In this scenario, it is very difficult to reach a consensus and decisions take forever to be made.

Three Important Traits of A leader

Service.

I personally believe this is the most important trait of a leader. leaders serve people, they lead by serving. Many people miss this important principle because of the misconceptions that the leader sis the all knowing boss who has everyone submitting to him/her. Leadership is not necessarily a position of authority. It is an opportunity of service. Most of the great leaders in this world never set out to become leaders. They just decided to serve people and in the process became great. You want to be a great leader?.. Have a heart Of service.

Character.

This is the foundation of leadership. without character, you will burn out as a leader. Many people conceive of leaders as people who need charisma. But character, I believe, trumps charisma. **You don't really need charisma before you can lead. Charismatic leaders in the history of the world burned out because they lacked character. Your reputation is what people think you are, your character is who you really are. It is what you are in the dark when nobody sees you. There are different types of leadership personalities and temperaments but one thing is common amongst them all, they have character, which precedes credibility. Rick Warren in his article Titles, The foundation of leadership is character not Charisma indicated that leaders with character have three main distinguishing features.

  • They have a message worth remembering.
  • They have a lifestyle worth considering.
  • They have a faith worth Imitating.

Influence.

Leaders exert an influence on people, causing them to organize into a community of actors who desire positive change. Any leader who lacks the ability to influence others cannot be called a leader in the first place. Real Influence is built on trust, and not on brute force. If people trust you, they will follow you.
