A day out in the field exploring and discovering a curious flower: Celosia cristata (Eng - Esp)
Greetings, fellow nature lovers! I hope you are all in good health and having an excellent, blessed day. It is a pleasure to share my visit to the countryside, where I discovered some beautiful flowers known as Cockscomb (or Cresta de Gallo)Celosia cristata L. It was my first time seeing these flowers, and I really liked their color; the common name certainly suits their shape—they look just like a rooster's comb, only larger. The countryside is one of my favorite places to relax, breathe fresh air, and enjoy connecting with nature. The day was perfect—cool temperatures and cloudy skies made it ideal for walking, wandering, and exploring this charming natural setting.
This area is located in the Benítez municipality of Sucre state and stands out for its beautiful landscapes, featuring mountain views along most of the route, abundant vegetation, grassy fields, and—in some cases—seasonal streams that swell when the rains arrive. The views are breathtaking, combining the diverse vegetation that blankets the mountainside. These are my favorite kinds of places; beyond the lovely scenery, the climate is generally cool, and you can often see mist at sunrise and sunset. During our walk, we saw very little mist on the mountains—perhaps because the sun was already up—but it was still a wonderful adventure to traverse this part of the state and admire the beautiful evergreen landscape 🌿 that characterizes the area and becomes even more lush when the rains come. After walking several kilometers, we were caught in the rain; we took shelter at a nearby house, and once the rain stopped, we continued our journey, as our goal was to see these striking flowers I had heard about from a kind lady.
Saludos amigos amantes de la naturaleza, deseo que te encuentren disfrutando de buena salud y tengan un excelente y bendecido día, es un placer compartir mi visita al campo donde pude conocer unas hermosas flores que se les conoce como Cresta de Gallo Celosia cristata L. Es la primera vez que veo estas flores y me gustó su color, definitivamente el nombre popular hace honor a la forma que tiene, parece una cresta de gallo, pero más grande; el campo es uno de mis lugares favoritos para relajarme, respirar aire puro y disfrutar el contacto con la naturaleza, el día estaba perfecto, baja temperatura y nubes lo cual era ideal para caminar, recorrer y explorar este encantador entorno natural.
Este campo se ubica en el municipio Benítez del estado Sucre y destaca por su hermosos paisajes rodeados de montaña en la mayor parte del trayecto, abundante vegetación, grama y en algunos casos riachuelos estacionales que crecen con la llegada de las lluvias, las vistas son impresionantes y combinan variada vegetación, que rodea la montaña, estos espacios son mis preferidos, porque además de la agradable vista, el clima por lo general es de temperatura baja y tienes la posibilidad de observar la neblina al amanecer y atardecer, durante el recorrido pudimos observar muy poca neblina en la montaña, tal vez porque ya el sol había salido, igual fue una linda aventura recorrer este tramo del estado y observar el hermoso paisaje siempreverde 🌿 que caracteriza a esta área del estado y se incrementa con la llegada de las lluvias, luego de recorrer varios kilómetros fuimos sorprendidos por la lluvia, nos resguardamos en una casa vecina y al cesar continuamos nuestro recorrido, porque la meta era conocer estas llamativas flores de la cual me había hablado una amable señora.
After traveling several kilometers along the main road, we took the turnoff leading to the countryside. The landscape is lovely, with abundant vegetation spilling over onto the sidewalk and street. A short distance later, we arrived at the settlement—a small area with few houses, though I was struck by their beautiful design; they don't resemble the traditional rural cottages made of mud and palm fronds. Instead, these are concrete homes set on spacious lots with large gardens where, alongside food crops, beautiful ornamental plants grow—including the cockscomb (Celosia). Its leaves feature purple centers, and the flower displays reddish, burgundy, and brown hues at its base. Other plants include the Cup of Gold and Ixora, but the cockscomb is definitely my favorite. It is a large, distinctive flower—quite different from the usual garden varieties—with a broad shape, numerous petals, and a base resembling that of a sunflower, though rectangular rather than circular.
With the arrival of the rainy season—the time of year we were visiting—the plant’s leaves take on a vibrant green, and the flowers don a striking burgundy color. The lady of the house explained that, in addition to the red variety, yellow and white ones also exist—though she has rarely seen them—while she cultivates the burgundy type, which is truly beautiful and eye-catching. After touring the garden, chatting with the homeowner, admiring the plant, and enjoying the lovely scenery and fresh breeze, we headed back.
Luego de avanzar varios kilómetros por la carretera principal, tomamos el desvío que conduce hasta el campo el paisaje es muy bonito con mucha vegetación que incluso sobresale a la acera y la calle, tras recorrer pocos metros llegamos finalmente al campo, un pequeño sector con pocas pocas viviendas, pero me sorprendió que tienen un hermoso diseño, no parecen las casas de campo como las que tradicionalmente se encuentran en las zonas rurales, hechas con barro y palma, estas son de cemento con amplios terrenos y grandes jardines, donde además de cultivar rubros alimenticio hay hermosas plantas ornamentales, entre ellas la cresta de gallo, sus hojas tienen manchas moradas en el centro y la flor es de color rojizo, vinotinto y marrón en la parte baja, además de esta flor, hay Copa de Oro, Ixoras, entre otras, pero definitivamente la Cresta de Gallo es mi favorita, es una flor grande, muy diferente a las que regularmente hay en el jardín, es amplia con muchos pétalos y una base similar a la flor de Girasol solo que esta no es circular, sino rectangular.
Con la llegada de las lluvias, que es el periodo actual, la planta adquiere un hermoso color verde en las hojas y las flores se visten de un llamativo color vino, la señora de la casa explicó que además de la roja se pueden conseguir otras de color amarillo y blanco, las cuales ha visto en pocas ocasiones, en su casa cultiva la de color vino, que es muy bonita y llamativa; luego de visitar el jardín conversar con la señora, observar esta hermosa planta, disfrutar las hermosas vistas del lugar y la fresca brisa, tomamos el camino de vuelta.
