The issues of aging How many things does a contemporary adult's mind process in a day?
I asked myself the question after watching a woman trying to curb her anxiety. Her struggle was evident, she was cooking, doing the dishes, sewing, watching what others were doing and in that plan she spent most of the afternoon.
There are people who claim they can't sit still, describe themselves as multifunctional, come to believe it's a gift when in reality it's an attack on their own emotional stability.
Why are we so eager to hide our emotions? Why silence our mind when it needs to scream?
I understand how difficult it must be to deal with problems of various kinds, so I asked a woman with these characteristics if her mania for doing everything at once was really a way of life to which she had become accustomed or simply a method of blocking herself. She did not know how to answer the question but her watery eyes said a lot.
She decided to comment slightly on her situation, she assumed that the problems overwhelmed her, she felt misunderstood, she did not sleep, the tension was out of control, everything irritated her, but doing housework calmed her down.
We already know then where the compulsive behavior of this woman comes from, like many others who prefer to submit to any anesthetic torture for the mind than to listen to the daily rumbling in her head of everything that haunts her.
I continued to listen to that woman, I observed her, she said she was a Christian believer in the good plan that God has for her. She was a hardworking woman, nothing and no one prevented her from indulging herself. At the mention of those words I realized one of her worries, money.
The lack of her own income saddens her, today she sews her furniture by hand, buying new ones or paying to repair the old ones is beyond her means. Her children offer help, but she is not able to demand more than what they give her.
With that I entertain myself, she muttered between teeth and with her face lowered. She did not want to continue showing her glassy eyes full of tears. Nothing like having one's own, nothing like being independent, nothing like spending one's own money, the woman continued the conversation to the rhythm of the needle and thread.
I know of countries where the elderly are a priority for governments. Every contemporary adult should be prepared for what is coming, even so, I consider that the economic part should not disturb the tranquility of adults.
In this sense, it would be of great help if all and not only some governments would strive to provide economic stability to those who have given their lives exercising a trade or profession thus avoiding emotional illnesses but, sadly in Venezuela all this is a utopia.
If I had continued to expand the conversation with this woman, I would have surely solved the great riddle. I preferred to leave the subject as far as it went because I don't know if she is ready to let go. Better safe than sorry.
