I've always maintained that nobody should be paid so much to play football because at the end of the day, that's all they do. They may try to represent causes and wear rainbow armbands but at the end of the day, they're just people being paid to kick a ball and run around.
I believe that other than institutions constantly trying to get their hands on a limited number of high level players, social media also plays a role in it. Fans' discussions around who earns more than who most likely gets airtime in board meetings and top clubs will be thinking of paying their best players what another top club pays their best players.
Also, the ridiculous wages and transfer fees affect the entire spectrum. So, for example, back in the early 2000s, a very good player would earn £100k per week but nowadays, that's basically wage for most English clubs and nope, it is not due to inflation because there's not been a time in the last 50 years when 100k a week isn't life changing money.
