What Children Learn
Part 2 of Doubts Firm My Religion is short verse poetry with companion art. It explores the ideas we learned as children and continues as in Part 1 to consider the validity of what others have said about meaning and purpose. Most importantly, it helps people to be unafraid; to explore all their doubts about what we call truth; and in the end, perhaps find a satisfying conclusion.
Waiting for a Red Horse
Under our desks hands crumble
dry playground earth. Using my finger
I spiral a nest.
The hamster looks down from his cage
on the counter. His mouth is a storehouse
of pellets.
Over his head our small paper world,
the one that we painted
with blue and green tempera.
Author’s note: This poem depicts school age children discovering for the first time that the world is a frightening place, teetering on the edge of oblivion.

Michigan, Illinois, Indiana
Clouds are in snapshots.
In chronological order
they jump like a flipbook.
One at a time they are heavy
and flat, borderless frames
in a deluge of rain, mid-western
landscape with following eyes.
The image they see,
you can only imagine.
Author’s note: This poem deals with places and movement. It perhaps suggests that a home is not a location, but a value within you.
