While the religions of these characters don't exist in the real world, they were originally, and extremely loosely, inspired by Christianity. This quote is a homage to that, as well as a vague bit of lore.
But as said, their religion has changed drastically since then. The church in this world worships the Sun. These kids manage to start to convince people that the Moon is deserving of worship, too.

Orphans of the church were typically segregated into those who God would favor, and those who God would not. Those in favor were children without behavioral issues, and they would be brought up within the church and cared for tenderly to produce faithful servants. Those outside of favor were children with behavioral issues, and they would be brought up outside of the church and treated severely to try to set them back on the right path.
Mab was brought under the church's care as a slow, aloof child, and faced a lot of mistreatment that he couldn't really understand. Abraham couldn't bear this and took Mab under his wing. Despite Mab's issues with processing and expressing emotion and verbal communication, Abraham's unwavering warmth and patience started to gradually heal Mab.
Eventually, Marie arrived and clung to the two of them. She thought that Mab was fun to play with, and Abraham made her feel safe. She always made sure that Mab wasn't alone.
Leo, a favored orphan, bonded with Abraham over debates about their faiths. While acting as a loyal member of the church, he was really one of Abraham's first followers. Although wary of each other as they both thought themselves as the closest person to Abraham and felt this challenged when they were together, Mab and Leo were able to forge a respectful and amicable relationship.
When the church began to feel disgraced by Abraham's preaching, he was caught and crucified. Abraham's God resurrected him as something greater than human. Caught in the crossfire of violence, Mab was changed as well. Witnessing this miracle, Marie had herself changed too, and then Leo.
Abraham's blessing became a curse of vampirism, altering their minds and their bodies, as well as their relationships, in unexpected ways.
