The proverb says “What an old man sees sitting down even if you climb the highest mountain or tallest tree you can’t see it.” Most times this proverb could be true while sometimes it could be false as we tend to see more than an old man. Wisdom isn’t measured by age but it is great we listen to our elders no matter how wise we have become.

Parents are like our guiding angels, they guide our path and try so hard not to lead us wrongly. It is difficult to find a parent who wants the worst for their children, they always want the best that’s why we hear of parental love and how important it is. Apart from the fact that our parents always want the best for us. Most times they could be wrong in their advice and even actions, but it takes a long time for an African parent to admit that they were wrong. Our African parents are always of the mindset that they are always right.
When you break a plate they flare up, when they break a plate they say the plate wasn’t properly manufactured or the plate got in their way.

My Parents have always been role models to me because they tend to guide me and my siblings in the right way and they do so by their actions and also by their words. There are been several scenarios where they have been right and then I was happy I listened to them.

When I was done with high school and needed to proceed to a tertiary institution to continue my education. I had to pass through the process of writing JAMB which is an exam I need to write to gain admission. I couldn’t get the course I wanted which was Medicine and Surgery so I had to rewrite it another year and I still applied for Medicine and Surgery. I wasn’t given that course of study instead I was given Microbiology. I spent days crying and I was thinking of going another year again.

My parents had to convince me to take the course and they told me that I would do well in Microbiology. It took a while to convince me, and finally, I decided to go for the course. At one point, while studying this course I was faced with lots of difficulties but then in the long run, I did so well in it and graduated with a great result. It took me years to realize that they were right and I kept thinking what staying another year at home would have done to me. I am grateful to them for convincing me to take the course.

It is also important to say that my parents have been wrong in one way or another. During my school days, I found out that my compound was always noisy at night, and going for night reading at school would help a lot. So I and my roommate decided to go.
The first night I went to school to read, I received a call from my dad where he scolded me and asked me to immediately book a ride and go home and never attend night classes again. He said if I can’t read at night then I should force myself to read during the day and that night classes have zero positive effect.

I listened to him but then I realized I couldn’t read during the day, so I continued going to school at night to read, and this time without his knowledge. When my results came out I did so well and when we were discussing I told him, that night classes helped. He noticed he had the wrong view about it and just said “Just be careful” After I graduated gracefully he said to my younger ones who are still in school “If you can’t read in your room go to school at night to read.”

Well, no one is perfect so we are bound to be wrong sometimes and right sometimes, that is why we have two sides of the coin.
