Sometimes the world seems repellent to me; that's probably why I keep to myself so much. However, reading that line back, my use of the word world, I should probably amend it to people because it's humanity's fault and not the planet's fault at all.

So many things annoy and bug me about people and their behaviours, expectations, actions and attitudes and rarely a day passes in which I don't observe something that makes me feel like running home and closing the door behind me to separate myself from such things. I don't sit about stewing over them though, however occasionally the chance to mention a few comes up, as it did this week in THE WEEKEND community as part of the weekend-engagement concept.

Laziness

I'm all for lazy moments of rest and relaxation be it at home after work, on the weekend, or on vacation. There's moments just made for it and I engage when I can and when appropriate; that's not the sort of laziness that bugs me.

What annoys me is people shirking their responsibilities, cutting corners, doing substandard work, having lazy attitudes like the expectation ethos that is so prevalent these days and generally operating in a lazy manner. This is especially so when that laziness impacts others, is of detriment to other people, and causes them to have to work harder to account for the initial laziness.

It's prevalent throughout society in so many ways and filters through to people's lives on the most basic of levels such as people taking a lazy approach to their personal development, progress and well-being. It seems lazy is the new black. Recently a friend of mine ended a relationship which I wrote briefly about a few days ago - it was because the lazy attitude her partner took towards the relationship - and both of those people will suffer for it.

I don't expect people to be one hundred percent across every aspect of their life, thoughts and actions, but I also believe laziness is a plague, an infectious one.

Bad drivers

I don't drive much although I don't drive far is probably more fitting a statement I suppose. I live in a first world country where road rules apply but it seems people don't care about them, their own safety or that of others. Inattentive driving is so common these days, I think possibly, because checking whether they received some Facebook likes on their latest post is a more compelling thing than paying attention to the road.

It's more than that though: Failing to indicate, give way, check blind-spots, late braking, early braking, last-minute turns, the inability to navigate roundabouts, reverse park or park between the lines, speeding, drug and drink driving, poor vehicle maintenance, tailgating, indecision, road-rage and any number of other things make roads a dangerous place these days so I'm glad not on them much.

Littering

This is a disgusting habit some have and goes deeper than simply being bad for the environment; it's disrespectful to one's fellow humans.

I believe we've all done it at some point, even me, but maybe not intentionally. Have you ever had a paper napkin blow off a plate and across the piazza while sitting at a caf茅? I have. That's littering unless it's chased after and collected. But intentional littering is what I refer to here.

Certain people hold a special place of disgust and derision with me; I refer to cigarette smokers who think it's ok to flick their butts on the ground when they're finished or out the window of their car.

I've read that cigarette butts are the worlds greatest form of plastic waste on the planet. The cellulose acetate the filters are made from degrades in around ten years but the chemicals, (hundreds of them including arsenic), contained within them remain for much longer and poison the planet and it's occupants. Some four and a half trillion butts are discarded each year around the world. That's 4,500,000,000,000 cigarette butts.

When I see someone flick a butt into the street or out of their car window - I'll be honest - I want to pick it up and force-feed it back to them; I just hate it so much. It's disgusting, callous, filthy and disrespectful. If a person want's to kill themselves by smoking that's ok by me, but why should my planet suffer for their behaviour? I hate people who do this, I hate them with a passion.

I hate all littering though and one can't take many steps on the street without seeing McDonalds wrappers, coffee cups, spat out chewing gum, face masks and any number of other pieces of trash carelessly discarded. In a world with so many environmental initiatives it's difficult to understand why people feel littering is acceptable still.

That's three things that bug me and, although I could keep talking about each, and more things that bug me, I'll leave it here as it's already a long post. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Thank you to galenkp@galenkp for another week of great writing suggestions and to take a look at the #weekend-engagement writing prompts this week go here or see it pinned in THE WEEKEND community.
