For any of us to reach our potential it takes many things combining over time; it's not an accident and each element is as important as the other in the process. One of those critical elements is that of encouragement and I believe a person should be able to encourage themselves, positive self-talk, and that they should be encouraged externally as well.

A word of encouragement is powerful and can change lives when delivered genuinely and at the right moment and it comes in many ways such as verbal praise, a gesture or a few worlds of respect and gratitude written or spoken just to name a few.
Encouragement helps bring focus, a sense of pride and achievement and can fortify and strengthen us allowing people to delve more deeply into their reserves to find even greater results; I believe it's also encouragement that helps people find and positively use all those other elements that help them see and attain their full potential.
I've very fortunate and blessed to have a man in my life who encourages me. That's not the only reason I manage to reach closer to my potential but it helps so much and I'm grateful for it. I know some people who are not as lucky and while they go ok I feel quite confident that with a little encouragement they could be doing much better.
