The triple 8 was not a lucky number for everybody. In germany we call the year 1888 "3 emperor year", because in March of that year emperor Wilhelm I died. He was succeeded by his son, who was already ill with cancer and only lasted 99 days. After him, the famous Wilhelm II was crowned, who reigned until the end of WW1 in 1918.
