If you polish it down to the steel, its possible that you dont see any damascus pattern anymore. Usually, the damascus pattern is achieved by dipping the steel into sulfuric acid, which disolves the different steels in a different way - that produces the pattern. You may have to do that yourself as well, to get the damascus look back after polishing.
