My favourite Carpenter movie is Dark Star, I guess you know that one? Despite being a super low budget production, its totally cool. It was Carpenter's first film, that he already started making in college. He wrote the story, directed and made the music for it.
It's so far out, you can almost picture this bunch of full stoned hippies having fun making that film. And for the time and low budget its really not bad at all.
