The 1 kg bars are a bit of a problem here. On a Pamp bar I would have to pay 19% VAT, and the Swiss stuff is a little expensive to begin with. Also in Gold, without the tax.
But there are alternatives. For example the 1 kg Fiji bar, which is a official coin actually, but it's a cast bar with a coin minted on it in fact. They are usually the cheapest around here.
Also pretty affordable are "2nd hand" Australian Kokaburra or Koala 1 kg coins. They are real coins, just the size of a beer matte and thick as a finger. Quite pretty actually, if you make little wooden stands for them, they are a nice decorative piece. The bars are more useful as door stops... :)
