Today I am going to show you the behind the scenes of the snowman that me, my brother, my cousin, and parents made today and how we made it.
If you already know me, then you would know that I am from the Philippines. Which is a tropical country, that doesn't experience winter. Meaning, no snow for me :(
But my dad thought of the most brilliant idea for us to experience snow!
We first gathered the accessories that the snowman needs. Actually, these accessories are all available and can be easily found around our house.
Twigs for the arms, Buttons for the eyes and the body, and a small carrot for the nose of our adorable snowman!
I forgot to include it here but for the scarf of the snowman, we got a piece of cloth that was just lying around.
Our dogs (i think they're bunnies though) loved that carrot and kept standing and reaching, hoping to get some of that small carrot. It was so funny!
My brother together with our cousin made a hat for the snowman! I didn't get the chance to take photos of how they made it but it was really easy!
Just find a few black colored papers lying around and cut it vertically (the length and the width, depends on how short or tall you want your hat to be). Then put some glue on both ends of the paper and stick it together. Trace the top of the hat and make a circle that is enough to cover the top of the hat. For the bottom of the hat, cut a bigger circle and just glue it onto the body of the hat. Then just tie a red ribbon around it! There you have it! Your DIY hat :)
We pushed our dining table towards the stairs and then covered it with a white cloth. For the background, my dad set up the beautiful white christmas lights.
Christmas lights are just so beautiful to look at, don't you think?
We didn't want a fail so we decided to make a trial first and made a newspaperman? (hehe) It was just a bunch of newspaper that was crumpled.
And that small plant? Oh that's a small growing fire tree from our front yard that my dad is trying to grow.
There it is! The only snow that the Philippines can get, crushed ice. Crushed ice that we Filipinos usually use for our tasty mais-con-yelo and halo-halo. We bought it for 50 php ($1).
This step is not easy because unlike real snow, it is not soft and kinda difficult to shape it. It hardens quickly, and you won't be able to form a shape if you are slow.
Plus! It is melting very fast and our workplace is already messy and soaking wet.
So everyone was panicking, kept adding some ice and forming the snowman. Even though our hands were already numb from the cold, we still did our best to form our snowman.
After successfully forming the snowman, we immediately moved to decorating the snowman.
We quickly put on its hat, tied the scarf around its neck. And pushed the stick with the carrot for its nose.
But the real challenge was to put on the buttons. Because as I said, crushed ice hardens. It hardens and the buttons would just fall. So we had to use a knife and make small caves for the buttons to fit in. And luckily, it worked!
I would describe our experience as messy but fun! :)
Yes! it was really messy and soaking wet (mind you, my mom was not a big fan of the mess). But we absolutely had fun, it proved that my family's teamwork is the best!
