“THE GLOBAL CITY”: A PLAY TRIBUTE TO ITALO CALVINO

We live in a globalized and computerized world in which there is a constant flow of people, who travel from one place to another, or who migrate for many different reasons, bringing their culture with them. Likewise, through the web we receive and send the most diverse cultural expressions. Our platform is a good example of what I say, in the various communities in which I participate I have been able to read texts from people living in many different countries and cultures.

Do you like theater? This week I'll write about an interesting play I saw last weekend. Last sunday the Italian Institute of Culture in Caracas presented in Municipal Theater of Chacao the play “The Global City” by Instabili Vaganti to open Italian Language Week Around the World 2023. The play is a tribute to Italo Calvino, Italian writer who was born 100 years ago, it is inspired by one of his most important works, "Invisible Cities".

It was an interesting experience because the play offer a multicultural experience. Actors spoke three languages: spanish, english and italian.Two young actors, a woman and a man, represented two travelers that are visiting different cities and cultures, but they also travel through their memories, their fears, their losses, their failures. They show the chaos of today's world in which misery and high technology coexist. It is an intimate, reflective work. Well, that is what I understood.

When play began a young man with his head covered by the cap of his jacket entered the room with a device that made noise and emitted colored lights, he did not enter from the stage but from where the audience enters and went down to the stage. Then a young woman entered the stage shortly after, when the young man was already there.

Behind them there was a screen, on which various moving images were reproduced, which changed according to the scene and the place they were visiting. The two actors also changed costumes as the scenes changed. The end of the play reminded me of the movie The Matrix, on the screen behind the two characters was an image of an Asian city, Shanghai, and its neon lights and a set of letters coming down through the screen.

This week there will be other activities of the Italian Language Week, I hope to be able to attend some other activity. I hope you enjoyed this brief review. See you next time. Thanks for reading.
