Greetings friends of Weekend, today I want to share with you a nice walk I did over the weekend to a mountain village called Frigiliana, located in Andalusia, southern Spain, very close to Nerja, on the slopes of Sierra Tejeda. From there you can see a beautiful mountain scenery, but also the Mediterranean Sea. How can you get there? The nearest airport is the airport of Málaga-Costa del Sol, you take the Mediterranean highway in the direction of Almería, about 60 kilometers away. I arrived there by bus, because I am living very close, in a coastal village called La Herradura, located 20 minutes from Nerja, where I took another bus to Frigiliana.

Frigiliana, the name of this beautiful mountain village is believed to come from a Roman character named Frexinius and "ana", which meant villa. It is also known by the name village of the three cultures, because over the centuries it was occupied by Moors, Jews and Christians, who were shaping what it is today. The Muslim occupation occurred from the year 711, who built a huge castle of 4,000, which was destroyed after the Christian reconquest. In 1490, because many lands in Frigiliana had been abandoned by the Moors, the Catholic Kings ordered the region to become the patrimony of the Jew Maimon Levi, as well as lands in Nerja and Maro, to keep them productive. It was in this way that the Jewish culture was incorporated into the cultural heritage of Frigiliana.

It was 10 am when Daniel and I arrived in Frigiliana, there was a clear blue sky. The bus dropped us off at the plaza de las tres culturas, where the bus stop is located. Daniel had not had breakfast and I wanted to have a hot chocolate. Because despite the clear sky I felt cold. In Frigiliana there are several places to eat or have coffee, but at 10 am some of them are not open yet. So we decided to start walking through its beautiful labyrinthine sloping streets, all white houses, whose windows and doors are full of plants and flowers. You walk through its stone streets and find narrow side streets or stairs going up or down to some house or to another street. I will show you some pictures.

After noon we finally sat down in a small cafe, Daniel was able to have breakfast and I was able to indulge in churros with hot chocolate.

One of the emblematic places of Frigiliana that you can visit, no matter if you are Catholic or not, is the church of San Antonio de Padua, a former Muslim mosque later converted into a Catholic temple. It is very beautiful, it preserves in its lateral naves arches that remind us of the old Muslim temple that it was. I share with you some photos.

The Sugar Factory or Palace of the Counts was a large manor house built in the 16th century by Count Manrique de Lara. Today it is known as The Sugar Factory because it houses the only cane honey factory in Europe.The main economic activity of Frigiliana is the production and sale of sugarcane honey.
