Not Everyone Is Happy About This Orchid Update ..

Just look at that face! It seems to tell a story all of its own. And if Molly could tell her version of the story, Vocally rather than through the expression in her face, it would be unpleasant I think. For when the time comes for an orchid update, Molly would much rather go run and hide then to be subjected to the photography that comes with it.

So… Not only today am I going to give you an orchid update, but I’m also going to give you Molly’s “Come On Dad” face.

Enjoy Both!

Once Upon A Time In Orchidville ..

I tried to kill all my orchids

I don’t know if you caught the post .. But I wrote a piece about how my orchids were making a comeback after a tragic mistake. Several, several months ago I tried to repot my orchids in a different media. I attempted to use lava rock which held too much moisture next to the roots and created a humid moist environment that was perfect for root rot. since that point I had repotted them again back into a bark media mixture.

It’s been about six weeks or so since I last posted an update on their condition. As you may remember, I did lose one of my beloved orchids. I guess the stress and loss of roots was just too much for the plant to overcome. It wasn’t long before it dried up and I was left with no other choice but to throw it out (The brown and dead Orchid a few shots up). But that is all water under the bridge and I learned from my mistakes and moved on.

Above are several shots of the orchid plants after the traumatic event. They all seem to be making a decent come back after the subjected stress. Only a handful of plants have wilted leaves and most of the old foliage has dried up and been replaced with new leaves. We have been keeping the plants cleaned up of old material and watering them appropriately. It appears that switching back to the bark was the best choice given the circumstances.

New roots are also taking foothold in the new media. I was delighted and relieved to see all the new root activity. I wasn’t sure the plants would even have enough energy to produce new routes so quickly, but they prove me wrong! They are tough little orchids that’s for sure.

Time will tell for sure, but until enough time has passed I’m still slightly holding my breath. With every day that passes, and every day that passes without another loss of an orchid, is a win-win. We’ll just give it some more time.

New Additions ..

And NOT Everyone Is So Happy About Them

1666973857995.pngMolly checking things out rather quickly, then speeding off after finding out it is NOT a cookie

Growing and caring for Orchids is one of our hobbies .. And one in which I used to post a lot about. It’s been a while since I’ve created a regular weekly post about orchids, and that saddens me but that’s the way life is sometimes. We don’t always get the time we want to partake in the things we enjoy. Life has been busy and so the Orchid posting has been put on the back burner.

So forgive me if I’ve already posted about this but I’m pretty sure I have not. We do have a few additions to a Orchids family! One small orchid came from my cousin in Lancaster county Pennsylvania.

My cousin is the type of individual that notices everything. I say this in a good way and in a complementary way to her personality. She notices things and then utilizes that information to pick out the perfect gifts at the perfect time. We don’t exchange gifts on a regular basis but from time to time she gives something just because. And usually that something is from her heart… And that means so much.

When I was younger I may not have appreciated this as much as I do now. I don’t feel bad for saying that, because that’s just a sign of age and maturity. When were younger we may not always see the reasons behind certain actions because we are not mature enough to appreciate them.

I’m glad I’ve matured lol.

But I’m sure not all would agree with that statement. Hehehe.

Molly Sure Doesn't

IMG_7440.JPG
Molly watching intently, wondering if I will torment her a bit more. She should trust her instincts! haha

And This One Is New As Well .. This orchid was also a gift. As many of you may already know, the business I was working for got sold abruptly. I am grateful that the new company that purchased us kept my position and I am still employed. We had to move to a new office and my secretary and I were split up. She is also now working from home and she was afraid she would kill the orchid that she was given at work. She did not want to take it home and risk killing it so she gave it to me.

Kind of ironic and funny given that I just about killed all my orchids, but we won’t go there.

I don’t have any plans on repotting these orchids just yet. They seem to be doing quite happy and I’m still not comfortable in operating another work and doing so well just to have it suffer. There are two orchids in this pot. Both look fantastic.

There is even a new bloom coming on from one of the cut stems.. I have to admit I don’t remember what color the bloom is on this or these orchids. I guess it will be a surprise if it actually grows into a fully matured bloom stem. Sometimes the secondary blooms don’t always amount to anything. It’s almost as if they sit there in this state for months and months and months on end. In the past I’ve had blooms come on and mature while others I’ve had to cut off after about a year of staring at the same thing. We’ll see where this one goes.

Let's Wrap This Orchid Update Up ..

First, I apologize for the rather lengthy Orchid Update. I suppose I had a lot to fill you in on. Today I took that pot that contain the dead orchid and removed it from the wall where we keep all the other plants. I figured it would be the perfect spot to place this new set of orchids.

I know one thing for sure, Molly is thrilled that it is off the floor and out of her face. I can’t blame her one bit. It’s not some thing familiar to her and she hasn’t grown to appreciate the orchids in the same way my wife and I have.

She does appreciate cookies and that’s what she’ll get after I’m done here.

Yeah.. Molly's happy face is pretty much the same as her sad face. It's part of her arsenal of tricks that she uses to get what she wants. And yes, it works all of the time. hehehe

A new start! A new beginning!

I just hope I don’t kill these Orchids too. Lol.

“You must remember, family is often born of blood, but it doesn't depend on blood. Nor is it exclusive of friendship. Family members can be your best friends, you know. And best friends, whether or not they are related to you, can be your family.”
