Yes I Said It..
Come on spring! I am tired of waiting for you even though it is only early March. I’m outside grilling and had a few minutes to walk around the exterior of my property to check things out.
There was nothing to see. Really, nothing at all. Well if you consider dead brown looking plant matter something to see, then I had plenty to see. Take for instance, around my mailbox. It looks like nothing has happened here for years and years. Total brown, dead, plant matter. Depressing really.
I took a stroll from the mailbox up to the house, and set my sights upon nothing but brown mulch, and brown non-active plant material. At least I did a fall cleanup rather than a spring cleanup and I’m set when it’s time that these plants want to start growing.
I won’t have to do anything in the spring except maybe touch up the mulch. Moving on, I head around the side of the house and see a rather brown St. John’s wort and my rosebush looks like death warmed over.
Nothing to see here! Let’s move on.
I go back around the front of the house and noticed that my Crimson pygmy barberry, that I planted roughly 14 years ago LOL, may need replaced. There’s some sort of bracket fungi attached to the stems of the plants. This can’t be a good sign! I may need to pull these out and replace them with something different this year. But what? I’m going to have to give that a little more thought.

I take a look up from the Crimson pygmy barberry, and see that I didn’t quite finish my fall cleanup project, and I still have some work to do. I see some brown ornamental grasses that have overwintered and need cut back. I usually clean these up in the fall but didn't get around to it for some reason. I guess I have some work to do this spring before they start sprouting new leaves. If I trim them after they start sprouting new leaves then I run the risk of cutting off the leaf tips and them looking like crap.
I suppose those brown grasses add some contrast to the two evergreens flanking them on either side. I have a weeping Alaskan Cedar and a few emerald green arborvitae planted in the front of the house, and they provide winter interest as well.
Underneath the Alaskan cedar, I have planted some Lariope, that I will cut back in the fall. They’ll soon be sprouting probably sometime in late April. I cut them back in the fall because they always seem to sprout sooner than I think they will and sometimes I cut off the tips. I don’t want to do that so I cut them off early. If I would leave them alone, then they would also add some winter interest. Although, with snow cover and how they sort of flatten out, I’m not sure how much interest would be established.
OK, this is a mouthful but our weeping Japanese Laceleaf palmatum disectum, Is also still quite dormant. I suppose I have a little spring fever here. I’m expecting the buds to be a little plumper than they are. Wishful thinking I suppose! It won’t be long. Given a few warm days and another month, these buds will be swollen and ready to pop with new leaves.
I forgot to show you the buds from the Bradford pear. The first picture in this post is from a Bradford pear in my front yard. Those buds, unlike the Japanese maple, are swollen and ready to pop. Given A few more warm days, and these will open up relatively quickly. The Bradford pears always seem to pop their buds sooner than a lot of other trees in this area.
Well I guess that’s all I have to show you this evening. I’m done my walk, and what I am grilling appears to be almost complete. I’m hungry and ready to eat something and forget about all this depressing brown plant matter around my house. I think I’ll go into a dormancy and awaken to flowers and green. That would be nice. Unlikely but nice.
