The main tower
As promised in a previous post here are a few images of Lincoln cathedral. I’ve intentionally not gone for the standard “touristy” type shots, but tried to select some slightly different views.
The nave
They started building Lincoln cathedral in 1072, under the orders of William The Conqueror. It was consecrated around twenty years later but work continued for another couple of hundred years. It was once thought to be the tallest building in the world, due to the now long gone, spires which were originally on top of the towers.
The western towers
It housed one of four copies of the original Magna Carta (this is because Hugh, the Bishop of Lincoln was one of the signatories). The Lincoln copy is now on loan to the United States, and is held in a library in California.
The Lincoln Imp
The legend of the Lincoln Imp seems to arouse a lot of interest with visitors (and gave Lincoln City, the local football team its nickname of The Imps). Allegedly the devil sent two imps to England expecting them to create havoc. When they reached Lincoln they were creating mayhem until an angel appeared and turned one to stone where he was, and can still be seen to this day.
Lincoln cathedral at night
Lincoln is pretty much sat in a valley with the cathedral sitting on top of the northern side. It can be seen for miles given its prominent position. One “game” that seemingly every child played when growing up was trying to be the first to spot the cathedral when returning to the city. And its still the sign that Lincolnites are nearly home.
