Why Did You Choose The Name You Did? #steemitnamechallenge
Why did we choose to name our blog on Steemit and also our YouTube channel Basics To Living? We wanted to go back to the basics of what is needed in life. A roof over our heads, water, and food. There are things that make life easier and that is electricity and internet, we cut the cord to cable 3 years ago as it was just getting way to expensive. We looked at our lives after I came back from my deployment to Iraq and realized we were going to lose our house because of problems I had physically and mentally from that deployment.
I am the one on the right. The other guy is one of my best friends. He survived Iraq to come home and die in an auto accident going to the VA three weeks after being home. I was supposed to be with him that day but could not go because I had a knee replacement just done. I wonder about that sometimes and think if I was with him maybe it would not have happened. I screwed up my knees, back and neck on that deployment, come home and thought the VA would help out and we would not lose our home. Well, that did not work out so good. On top of all this dealing with PTSD did not help at all and all the meds from the VA really made things a lot worse.
So we lost our home and had to find something else and was just lost so we took stock of things and realized we needed to go back to the basics to living, so that is what we did, we found the land we have through owner financing, not the best but the foreclosure ruined our credit not to mention all the medical bills VA did not cover, we started all over again. We had a camper that we bought during my deployment and it was paid off, so we got a friend here to go and pull it here for us, as my truck was a casualty of everything too, trying to figure out how to get another one, because we really need it hauling building supplies and such, so any help there would be greatly appreciated. We got here and found out we could get pallets for free if we hauled them off at the solar project going on here, then we found through a friend an office trailer, our small house I post about. We had to rent a couple places to live for a little while but it was hard to put money into getting things done on property paying rent so we got some things in place and we all moved to the property.
We were back to the basics. We got lucky and getting power on our property was really cheap so we got that put in. We hauled water for three years, hauling the water and pallets was fun in a minivan, yes it blew the motor in it, and a little trailer, till we found a well driller that would drill a well on a payment plan and scraped half the cost up as a down payment and make payments every month. That will be paid off in two months, built a pallet cabin a little at a time when we had the money. Found a motorhome that did not run and scraped enough up to get it and get it hauled over to the property. We started over and only had the basics so we thought Basics To Living sounded like a good name for our channel and blog. My name is Mike and me and the family is "Basics To Living".
I do not think we will really ever change the name of our blog or YouTube channel because it keeps us grounded in that we can start over and live with the basics and only the basics. It is not an easy life, like homesteading or just having the basics but it can be a fulfilling life.
